The Periodic Table

Definitions Molecule – Matter than has two or more elements chemically bonded together. Compound – A molecule with two atoms chemically bonded together. Ionic Compound – A molecule that is ionically bonded together. Chemical Formula – A chemical formula is a way of expressing information about the elements and amount of elements in a molecule.

Definitions Metal – A material that is typically shiny, has a high boiling and melting point and is a good conductor of electricity. Metalloid – A material that has a combination of metal and non-metal properties. Non-metal – A Material that is typically gaseous, has a low melting and boiling point, not shiny and is a poor conductor of electricity.

Who created it? The quest for a systematic arrangement of the elements started with the discovery of individual elements. By 1860 about 60 elements were known and a method was needed for organization. In 1869, Russian chemist Dimitri Mendeleev proposed arranging elements by atomic weights and properties. The table contained gaps but Mendeleev predicted the discovery of new elements.

You've got Your Periods... Even though they skip some squares in between, all of the rows go left to right. When you look at a periodic table, each of the rows is considered to be a different period (Get it? Like PERIODic table.) quoted from

Periods = Rows In the periodic table, elements have something in common if they are in the same row. All of the elements in a period have the same number of atomic orbitals.atomic orbitals Every element in the top row (the first period) has one orbital for its electrons. And you got your groups… The periodic table has a special name for its columns, too. When a column goes from top to bottom, it's called a group. quoted from ml ml

Groups = Columns The elements in a group have the same number of electrons in their outer orbital. Every element in the first column (group one) has one electron in its outer shell. Every element on the second column (group two) has two electrons in the outer shell. As you keep counting the columns, you'll know how many electrons are in the outer shell. There are some exceptions to the order when you look at the transition elements, but you get the general idea.transition elements

Research a Molecule Activity Pick a molecule that you find interesting to research (must be used by us.) Research the following: Explain the physical and chemical properties of the compound. What is the chemical formula? How was the compound discovered? (1 paragraph) How is the compound used in industry? Homes?

Research the Molecule Activity On your poster: Draw a diagram of your molecule. Include: Chemical Formula How it was discovered. How it is used in industry/home. 3 harmful effects Treatments How it can be safely disposed. Pictures you want to add.

Presentations On Tuesday (10/4) you will place your poster somewhere in the room. Students will look at it and make some comments on it. We come back together as a class and determine which chemicals are the most and least helpful to us and the environment.
