SATS Information The KS2 SATs will take place between Monday 9th May and Thursday 13th May 2016.

The New SATs Tests 2016 The SATs have changed this year, to reflect the New National Curriculum. The children will complete tests in the following areas:  Reading  Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG)  Maths

Reading Paper The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on three passages of text. Children will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test. Types of questions:  Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’  Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’  Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’  Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’  Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Test (SPAG) The grammar, punctuation and spelling test will consist of two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes, and a spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes. The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-types of questions:  Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the sentence below’  Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’

Spelling Test!  Twenty sentences will be read out.  Each sentence has a word missing, children need to listen carefully to the missing word and fill this in, making sure they spell it correctly.  The word will be read out, then read out within a sentence, then repeated a third time

Spelling Homework We are following SPECTACULAR SPELLINGS – this involves spellings each morning for minutes; involving a variety of activities. Children take a spelling book home with the spellings they need to learn each week. It is important they learn all the spellings.

Writing There is not a Writing SATs paper – this is teacher assessed and involves writing in all curriculum areas.  The pupil can write for a range of purposes and audiences (including writing a short story):  creating atmosphere, and integrating dialogue to convey character and advance the action  selecting vocabulary and grammatical structures that reflect the level of formality required mostly correctly  using a range of cohesive devices, including adverbials, within and across sentences and paragraphs  using passive and modal verbs mostly appropriately  using a wide range of clause structures, sometimes varying their position within the sentence  using adverbs, preposition phrases and expanded noun phrases effectively to add detail, qualification and precision  using inverted commas, commas for clarity, and punctuation for parenthesis mostly correctly, and making some correct use of semi-colons, dashes, colons and hyphens  spelling most words correctly* (years 5 and 6)  maintaining legibility, fluency and speed in handwriting through choosing whether or not to join specific letters.

Maths. Children will sit three papers in maths:  Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes  Papers 2 and 3: reasoning, 40 minutes per paper Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division. Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including:  Multiple choice  True or false  Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart  Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem

Science If Whitecotes is selected the tests will take place between Monday 6 to Friday 17 June. There will be three papers:  Biology: 25 minutes, 22 marks  Chemistry: 25 minutes, 22 marks  Physics: 25 minutes, 22 marks Example Questions:  Biology: ‘Describe the differences in the life cycle of an amphibian and a mammal’  Chemistry: ‘Group a list of materials according to whether they are solid, liquid or gas’  Physics: ‘Predict whether two magnets will attract or repel each other, based on where the poles are facing’

Sample Materials Sadly, only one practice paper per test has been released. There are a number of old SATs papers online, they are linked to the old curriculum, however they can still be used as practice, especially to revise skills learnt in Year 3, 4 and 5.

What to do now…  Learn all the time tables up to 12 x 12  Learn all the division facts up to 12 x 12  Practice standard methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division  Learn different grammatical terminology  Answer questions about reading books Make revision fun!

Good Revision Websites  - fun games and activities for both Maths and Literacy  - a great site for all-round revision  - tests and games for all subjects  - a fantastic spelling website set-up by another Year 6 teacher – lots of previous spelling tests which are great for practice  – Games to practice SPAG and Maths skills  - English boot camp!  - SPAG Test 
