Networking Chapter 7

This presentation covers What is a network? Types of network

What is a network? Networks allow two or more computers to communicate with each other. Computers can be connected using different mediums, such as: – Ethernet cable – Satellite – Infrared – Lasers – Wireless transmissions – etc

What is a network? There are different methods of connecting computers too. Different network topologies can be employed. – If you are interested look up the following types: Ring Star Bus

What can connect to a network? Computers aren’t the only things that connect to a network. Other devices such as mobile phones, game consoles and PDAs can also work on networks.

Types of network There are two types of network you should be familiar with… – Peer-to-Peer (P2P) – Client-Server

Peer-to-Peer In this type of network computers have equal status. Any computer on the network can provide internet access, printer access, file access etc. The cost of setting up this type of network is very cheap in comparison to client-server networks but the management of the network is dependant upon each individual who manages their own computer.

Client-Server This network is based around one central computer, known as the server, which tends to be very powerful. The clients connect to the server. The server stores all files, controls access rights, printer controls, internet access etc. It is a much more managed system but is more costly to set up.

What should you do now? Research the following: – Advantages and Disadvantages of Peer-to-Peer networks. – Advantages and Disadvantages of Client-Server networks. – Advantages and Disadvantages of networks in general. There are loads of resources online and in the text book. I’ll post my own versions online at a later date.
