ESA facts and figures  Over 50 years of experience  22 Member States  Eight sites/facilities in Europe, about 2200 staff  5.2 billion Euro budget (2016)  Over 80 satellites designed, tested and operated in flight

Member States ESA has 22 Member States: 20 states of the EU (AT, BE, CZ, DE, DK, EE, ES, FI, FR, IT, GR, HU, IE, LU, NL, PT, PL, RO, SE, UK) plus Norway and Switzerland. Seven other EU states have Cooperation Agreements with ESA: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Slovakia and Slovenia. Discussions are ongoing with Croatia. Canada takes part in some programmes under a long- standing Cooperation Agreement.

Activities ESA is one of the few space agencies in the world to combine responsibility in nearly all areas of space activity * Space science is a Mandatory programme, all Member States contribute to it according to GNP. All other programmes are Optional, funded ‘a la carte’ by Participating States. space science telecommunications human spaceflight exploration earth observation launchers navigation operationstechnology

ESA education objectives 1.Motivate and enable young people to enhance their literacy & competence in sciences and technology (STEM disciplines) 2.Inspire and enable young people to consider pursuing a career in the STEM field, in the space domain in particular 3.Contribute to increase youngsters’ awareness of the importance of ESA (European space programme), space research, exploration and applications in modern society and economy

ESA education: a diversified approach Focus on Future STEM/SPACE Careers Space is the subject ESA ACADEMY Hands-on space projects: Satellite projects Scientific instrumentation and experimentation Technology demonstration experiments + Academic support: Courses, schools and workshops Participation to conferences Lectures and seminars of ESA experts School pupils & teachers Universities Space is the context Formal education, right into the schools, with: o teacher training o classroom activities to support the curriculum in an innovative way o competitions learning to think, learning to do, learning to collaborate Informal education, learning while having fun

There is NO STEM curricular subject that: is not covered by a space discipline cannot be linked to a space example cannot be linked to a space mission cannot be linked to a career in the space sector Space for formal education

ESA’s primary & secondary umbrella project with Member States Started in 2006 with a pilot in the Netherlands: ESERO is 10 years! Tailored to the needs of different national school systems, curricula and priorities Based on synergies with existing national educational stakeholders & networks and the space sector (formal & informal). Building a network of space education offices in ESA’s Member States targeting STEM formal education Co-funded by ESA and national institutions (50%-50%), in partnerships with Educational Institutions with demonstrated expertise and outstanding reputation What is ESERO?

 Targeting the teachers community as the key actors to make a real change in STEM education as an effective multiplying factor  Using space as a theme/context to teach the STEM school curriculum “The ESERO concept in action”: Bringing space to the classroom  Providing access to space content, data, facilities, methodology, expertise and role models

Nordic ESERO (NO, SE, FI, DK) ESERO Portugal ESERO Ireland ESERO UK ESERO Belgium ESERO NL ESERO Romania ESERO Poland ESERO Czech Republic ESERO Austria ESERO keeps growing

Inflight call connection with ISS, ESERO UK, NORDIC ESERO and ESERO Poland Live coverage thought a livestream on ESA website Main theme of today CAREERS opportunities in STEM! Astronauts are inspiring role models for students! We need hundreds of different STEM profiles! To bring an astronaut to space, to build and maintain the ISS, to design, build, operate satellites and use their data. Inflight call event
