The Ethics of Atticus Finch

 “The main reason is if I didn’t defend him I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” (Pg.75)  His will to see things through  He cannot back down from his own ethics

Difference and Justice  “…whenever a white man does that [cheats] to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash.” Atticus was speaking so quietly his last word crashed on our ears. I looked up, and his face was vehement. “There’s nothing more sickening to me than a low-grade white man who’ll take advantage of a Negro’s ignorance. (Lee page 220)

“Mis-ter Finch, hold on,” said Mr. Tate. “Jem never stabbed Bob Ewell.” Atticus was silent for a moment. He looked at Mr.Tate as if he appreciated what he said. But Atticus shook his head. “Heck, its mighty kind of you and I know you’re doing it from that good heart of yours, but don’t start anything like that.” Mr.Tate got up and went to the edge of the porch. He spat into the shrubbery, then thrust his hands into his hip pockets and faced Atticus. “Like what?” he said. “I’m sorry if I spoke sharply, Heck,” Atticus said simply, “but nobody’s hushing this up. I don’t live that way.” (Lee page 273)

 “I’m simply defending a negro.” (p.75)  He thinks African people are the same as whites  Refers to Africans like there is no separation between the two races  “Because that’s the only way he can pay me. He has no money.”(pg.21)  Willing to help the poor even though they cant pay  Accepts the fact that they have no money and makes a compromise
