Exaggeration Higher English Close Reading Skills.

What is hyperbole? In Spain the mosquitoes are so big, people can dry them out and use them as footstools.

Definition of exaggeration… This feature of language, which is also known as hyperbole, is found in many kinds of writing. It can be used in satire* with serious purpose, but its most common use is in achieving a comic effect. It is very closely associated with tone and can be used to create on which could be, for example, humorous or derisory** or pejorative*** or indulgent**** or affectionate.

Definitions… * satire: 1 the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticise people’s stupidity or vices. **derisive: expressing contempt or ridicule. ***pejorative: expressing contempt or disapproval. ****indulgent: readily indulging someone or overlooking their faults; tolerant or lenient.

Can you come up with some humorous hyperbole? My sister wears so much make-up…  Marilyn Manson freaked out when he saw her.

My teacher is so old… He thinks Shakespeare is modern…
