Blue Shirt Day! Let’s STOMP Out Bullying at DLS!

 We wear blue to day to raise awareness and talk about Bullying.  Blue Shirt day kicks off our Week of RESPECT!  During this whole week we will be talking about ways to respect each other, take care of each others feelings and treat each other kindly.  We have some fun activities planned this week……. What is Blue Shirt Day?

We will start our week of Respect with Blue Shirt day. We will talk about bullying, what it is and how to deal with it safely. Today we will be watching a read aloud of the book “ONE” by Kathryn Otoshi Later today in our classrooms we will talk more about the book “ONE” and bullying Ms. Woods will be pushing into classes this week to talk about ways we can RESPECT each other and you will all be taking THE GOLDEN RULE PLEDGE! WEEK OF RESPECT 2016 Dual Language School

The theme of this week will be: Everyone Counts at DLS because we use the Golden Rule! Week of Respect 2016 Dual Language School

 With Ms. Woods and your classroom teachers we will be creating a MURAL, that will show that every one counts at DLS and that we all pledge to use the Golden Rule.  You will be making a Rainbow with ALL of your names on the Rainbow  You will be signing GOLDEN RULE PLEDGE COINS, to help fill up a Pot O Gold at the ends of the Rainbow!!!  Ms. Macomber is also going to be making a video of you taking the pledge and Week of Respect Activties. Week of Respect 2016

 Lets start by talking about BULLYING…… Week of Respect 2016 BLUE SHIRT DAY Bullying is a severe, hurtful form is disrespect. Bullying is when a more powerful person hurts someone’s body, feelings or things on purpose again and again.

IS it Bullying? TEASING or MAKING JOKES Everyone is having fun and laughing No one is getting hurt Everyone is participating equally CONFLICT No one is having fun There is a possible solution to the problem Equal power with people in conflict There is a specific problem or issue that people don’t agree on MEAN MOMENT Someone is being hurt on purpose It is a ONE TIME reaction to a strong feeling or problem BULLYING Someone is being hurt physically, emotionally, social or verbally Someone is being hurt on purpose Only bully is having a good time or laughing, victim is not Unequal balance of power Happens over and over again Someone is being hurt on purpose

What are the ways people bully? Here are some types of bullying VERBAL saying mean words, yelling, making fun of someone, saying things that are not true about someone, spreading rumors. NON-VERBAL Eye rolling, mean faces, mean gestures SOCIAL leaving someone out on purpose, getting someone to stop being friends with someone else, being a ‘freinemy’, mean sometimes, nice other times PHYSCIAL hurting someone's body, unwanted touching, punching, kicking, pinching, taking someone's things, destroying someone's things. CYBER writing mean things online about someone, posting hurtful words or pictures, making mean comments, taking and posting pictures without permission

 Now, we are going the watch and listen to the read aloud the book “ONE” by Kathyrn Otoshi  As you are watching and listening, think about how this book is talking about bullying?  Pay attention to what the characters do to stop bullying Week of Respect 2016

Week of Respect 2016 Wow….what a great book! Did you notice how “1” helped stop Red from bullying others? So you see………… It just takes 1 person to make a difference, stand up to a bully and show respect to others…..so that’s why EVERYONE COUNTS AT DUAL LANGUAGE SCHOOL!!!!! DUAL LANGUAGE SCHOOL!!!!! EVERYONE COUNTS! That means ALL OF YOU! You are all special, wonderful and unique….you all matter, and you can all help make DLS, a bully free, respectful school.

 Tell the bully to stop, stand up for yourself, then quickly walk away to an adult.  Stay safe…don’t respond physically  Get away from the bully if you seen them coming near you….get to an adult or your friends.  Tell an adult right away  Ask friends to help, by siting with you at lunch, and being with you.  Bullies are much less likely to hurt you if you are surrounded by your friends and people you trust. Lets talk about some ways you can help STOMP out Bullying………

Week of Respect 2016 Let’s STOMP Out Bullying…. ALWAYS Tell and Adult! You are still learning how to deal with this difficult situation and should not deal with this by yourself. Adults can help you to feel better and the adults can work with the bully so they stop hurting you. If you see someone being bullied: if you can, tell the bully to stop. Be a friend to the person being bullied. Tell an adult about what’s going on.

The Golden RULE! Treat others how you want to be treated So Let’s STOMP Out Bullying at DLS!
