Summary The scarlet Ibis is a first person narration about a boy and his younger brother named Doodle. The narrator talks about the story of his crippled brother and how he let his pride get in the way.

Conflicts One conflict found in this story is Person vs. Self; Narrator has pride and doesn’t want a crippled brother. The second conflict found is another Person vs. Self; Doodle wants to be socially accepted and tries to make his brother proud after seeing the painting his brother created.

Setting Time; Around the late 1920’s maybe early 1930’s, multiple season changes. Place; Southern U.S., Florida.

Theme General: Love Specific: When you love somebody enough, you can feel strong emotions, such as pride and regret.

Literary Elements 1- Pathos; We feel sympathy for Doodle and the narrator when he found Doodle under the bush. 2- Symbol; The dead Ibis is a symbol of death and bad luck. 3- Epiphany; When the narrator realized that he shouldn’t have let his pride get the best of him after Doodle’s death.

Some important points… 1. The narrator cries only because he realizes that Doodle only learned to walk for him and not disappoint him. 2. The narrator is disappointed at himself for making pride take over and be the only thing to make Doodle walk. 3. Doodle buries the dead ibis in the garden after witnessing it die in front of him. 4. When the narrator sets goals for Doodle he works hard to active those goals for the narrator because he doesn’t want to let his older brother be disappoint in him for not trying.
