Assessment Information 6/10/15

Purpose of this session To share the new primary curriculum with parents and how we at Fernvale are implementing this for our children. To give parents a good understanding of how we are assessing the children against the new curriculum. To give parents information on what the school’s focus and priorities are this year.

The New Curriculum The aim is to slim down the content of the curriculum in almost all subjects, though not in primary English, maths or science. The government says the new curriculum does not tell teachers "how to teach", but concentrates on "the essential knowledge and skills every child should have" so that teachers "have the freedom to shape the curriculum to their pupils' needs". The new curriculum covers primary school pupils, aged five to 11, and secondary schools pupils up to the age of 14.

So what’s changed? Lots! In maths, children will be expected to learn more at an earlier age - for example to know their 12 times table by the age of nine. History will take a more chronological approach than under the old curriculum. In English, there is more importance placed on spelling and grammar. The new computing curriculum will require pupils to learn how to write code. In science, there is a shift towards hard facts and "scientific knowledge“ To find out more go to our website and click on key information. There are changes to the content of all subjects in the national curriculum. A summary can be found on the Department for Education website. We have put a link on our website to help parents.Department for Education website.

Assessments The government’s policy of removing level descriptors from the National Curriculum (NC) is set out in terms of freeing schools from an imposed measure of pupil progress. The Department for Education (DfE) has said that levels are not very good with respect to helping parents to understand how far their child is improving. In their place, from September 2015, “it will be for schools to decide how they assess pupils’ progress”.

How are we assessing our pupils? We are using bands and steps. Example Band 1 – Year 1 Band 2 – Year 2 Band 3 – Year 3 Band 4 – Year 4 Band 5 – Year 5 Band 6 – Year 6 In the Autumn term 2015 most of our children will be working on the previous year band to make sure they are secure plus in all areas so they can build on their knowledge and be secure in their own year band by the end of the academic year.

Steps = Progress B B B+ S+ S S W+ W W B = Beginning to work within that band W = Working within that band S = Secure within that band National expectations for the end of each year are for the children to be secure. All children will be at different points depending on ability. Expected progress is 6 steps a year for each child.

Beginning (b) A child is starting to learn the content in a band. 1b= Year 1 beginning 4b=Year 4 beginning Working within (w) A child’s learning is fully focussed on the content of the band. 1w= Year 1 working within 4w=Year 4 working within Secure (s) A child can confidently demonstrate an overall grasp of the content within a band. 1s= Year 1 secure 4s=Year 4 secure

At the end of the academic year Year Group Working just within age related expectations At age related expectation Working above age related expectations Year 11W+1S1S+ Year 22W+ 2S (The National Standard) 2S+ Year 33W+3S3S+ Year 44W+4S4S+ Year 55W+5S5S+

How is Fernvale adapting to the new approach to assessments? Staff Training Target Tracker – an aid for assessments that allow teachers to track pupil progress. Moderation sessions Partnerships with other schools. Parent Partnership The focus is always good and better teaching and learning at all times.

What can you do to help? Parents Evening. (Please return your slip by Wednesday 7 th October.) Encourage your child to work on their targets at home. If you don’t understand something please ask. Check our website regularly to see what your child is learning that term.

What are we doing to ensure children are progressing well? We monitor good quality teaching and learning … Learning walks Book scrutiny Observations Pupil progress meetings once a term. Planning checks Target checks and much more… Interventions

School Development Plan To ensure the end of Key Stage 1 and 2 progress is good or better for all children in reading, writing, mathematics and science. Increase the percentage of pupils exceeding expectations in writing and science. Develop a deeper understanding of the mastery approach to education and apply this within daily teaching. Embed enquiry based learning into lessons throughout the curriculum.
