Computer Fundamentals Desktop Publishing & Web Design MSCH 233 Lecture 9

What is ‘Desktop publishing’? Desktop publishing is the use of the computer and specialized software to create documents for desktop or commercial printing. Desktop publishing refers to the process of using the computer to produce documents such as newsletters, brochures, books, and other publications.

How a desktop publishing is created? The basic creation of a document using desktop publishing techniques involves 6 areas: Design Setup Text Images File preparation Printing.

Why Desktop Publishing is important? Enhance communication by making it possible to quickly and efficiently produce printed and electronic documents. Allows the user to rearrange text and graphics on screen, change typefaces as easily before finally committing a design to paper. Enhance visual communication

Support Application Font creation applications: allow users to design and create their own typefaces Type Manipulation: Allow users to modify text in visually creative ways.

How to create a Web Page? To create a basic web page you can use a text editor or word processor, but you need to know a code called HTML.

What is HTML ? HTML stands for Hypertext Mark-up Language Consist of commands, called Tags which are pieces of text telling the web browser how to display text or graphic. example of HTML Code: - Yahoo Site

What if you are not familiar with HTML? you can use a web editor like Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver -Its user friendly and WYSIWYG ( what you see is what you get) -A web editor contains buttons and menu items enable you to design a page without writing HTML. They automatically produce the tags

What are Hyperlink? Before you publish a web site you need to link the pages with hyperlink. A Hyperlink is a piece of highlighted text or picture that acts as a link to another page. Types of Hyperlinks:  Local Links  External Links.
