Reflective Conversations

Steps to Implementation 1.Students are purposefully grouped in pairs. Person A asks Person B one Before-Reading question. They reverse roles and then begin reading the non-fiction text. They will stop at a teacher or student designated spot. 2.After reading that section, Person A asks Person B one During-Reading question. They reverse roles. This can continue until text is read. 3.Teachers, students should paraphrase how their partner answered the question to ensure accurate, active listening. Continue the conversation if possible (another question, another clarification, jot a note, etc.).

Steps to Implementation 4.Person A asks Person B one After-Reading question. They reverse roles and complete the conversation. 5.Follow-Up Ideas: Summarizing the whole text, writing opportunities, student self- assessment or peer checks, whole group discussions, debates…

Let’s Try It! Partner Up! Decide who is “A” and who is “B” Supplies: Challenge with Challenging Text; Reflective Conversation Questions in packet

Step One – Before Reading Person “A” asks Person “B” a question from the Before Reading section. Person “B” answers. Person “A”, paraphrase and keep the conversation going if possible. Reverse Roles Begin reading p. 1, Challenge with Challenging Texts. STOP: Right before Sentence Structure subtitle (p. 1)

Step Two – During & After Reading DURING: After the stopping point, Person “A” asks Person “B” a During Reading Question. Person “A” paraphrases. Reverse Roles. AFTER: Continue to read the last section on p. 1, “Sentence Structure”. At the end of this page, Person “A” asks Person “B” an After Reading Question. Paraphrase and continue the conversation if appropriate. Reverse Roles.
