Properties of Real Numbers Ms. Gonzales’ Math Class

Commutative Property Commutative sounds like commute which mean go back and forth. Commutative Property of Addition- Changing the order of addends does not change the same. A + B = B + A Commutative Property of Multiplication- Changing the order of factors does not change the product. 5 x 6 = 6 x 5

Associative Property You associate with friends in groups! Associative Property of Addition- Changing the grouping of addends does not change the sum. (4 + 3) + 2 = 4 + (3 + 2) Associative Property of Multiplication- Changing the grouping of factors does not change the product4 x (6 x 9) = (4 x 6) x 9

Distributive Property When you distribute something, you separate it into portions. The Distributive Property lets you separate an operation into parts. Distributive Property states for any numbers a, b, and c: a x (b + c) = (ab) + (ac) a x (b – c) = (ab) - (ac)

Identity Property When you add or multiply and the number’s value does not change. The identity element for addition is 0. x + 0 = x = 89 The identity element for multiplication is 1. y x 1 = y62 x 1 = 62

Inverse Properties When a number combines with other number in any order, and the result is zero or one. Additive inverse- when a number is added to it’s inverse, the sum is always zero. h + -h = = 0 Multiplicative inverse- when a number is multiplied by its inverse, the produce is always one. p x 1 = x 1 =1 p-8.1
