In your composition book, write today’s date. Then answer the questions in complete sentences after reading the prologue. 1.How can our actions, large and small, affect our futures? 2. Can human beings choose not to remember? When and why might a person choose to forget? Explain your thinking.

Part 1 Read pages 1-12 (stop at Saturday, August 19)  Why did Erik and his dad leave before Paul and his mom?  Why is the family moving?  Who was driving the car? (Paul’s memory)  Why is Paul scared of Erik?  What is the zombie? What does it represent?

Levels of Questions Literal Questions Interpretive Questions Universal Questions

Literal Questions You can answer questions on the literal level by looking to the text directly. Ex: What kind of car does Mrs. Fisher drive?

Interpretive Questions You cannot find answers to interpretive questions directly in the text; however, textual evidence points to and supports your answers. Ex: What emotions does Paul feel as he remembers the incident with the mailbox?

Universal Questions These questions go beyond the text. They require you to think about the larger issues or ideas raised by the text. Ex: Can people choose to forget?
