Open Math Module 3 The WIPPEA lesson components can be used for any lesson delivery format:  Face-to-Face Classroom Instruction  Flipped Lessons  Self-Paced/Student Independent Study  Blended Online and Face-to-Face Click on the name of a component to learn about its role in an effective lesson. 4.3 WIPPEA and Your Lesson Plan Approach Application Evaluation Practice Presentation Introduction Warm Up WIPPEA

Open Math Module 3 Warm-Up Assesses prior knowledge by reviewing previous materials relevant to the current lesson. Introduce an activity that reviews previously learned content (e.g., for a vocabulary lesson, the warm-up may be a quick matching exercise with words previously learned and their definitions), and also include an activity that focuses on the topic to be taught. 4.3 WIPPEA: Warm-Up Application Evaluation Practice Presentation Introduction Warm Up WIPPEA TEAL Center Fact Sheet : Effective Lesson Planning

Open Math Module 3 Introduction Provides a broad overview of the content and concepts to be taught and focuses the learners’ attention on the new lesson. Introduce the purpose of the lesson by stating and writing the objectives for learners and discussing the lesson content and benefits by relating the objective to learners’ own lives. Assess learners’ prior knowledge of the new material by asking questions and writing learners’ responses on a chalkboard or flip chart. 4.3 WIPPEA: Introduction Application Evaluation Practice Presentation Introduction Warm Up WIPPEA TEAL Center Fact Sheet : Effective Lesson Planning

Open Math Module 3 Presentation Teaches the lesson content and concepts. Create an activity to introduce the concept or skill (e.g., introduce new vocabulary by asking learners to work in groups to identify words related to taking medications) and then introduce information through a variety of modalities using visuals, realia, description, explanation, and written text. Check for learner understanding of the new material and make changes in lesson procedures if necessary. 4.3 WIPPEA: Presentation Application Evaluation Practice Presentation Introduction Warm Up WIPPEA TEAL Center Fact Sheet : Effective Lesson Planning

Open Math Module 3 Practice Models the skills and provides opportunities for guided practice. Introduce a variety of activities that allow learners to work in groups, in pairs, or independently to practice the skills, concepts, and information presented. Integrate technology into activities as available. 4.3 WIPPEA: Practice Application Evaluation Practice Presentation Introduction Warm Up WIPPEA TEAL Center Fact Sheet : Effective Lesson Planning

Open Math Module 3 Evaluation Assesses each learner’s attainment of the objective. Include oral, aural, written, or applied performance assessments. For example, ask learners to fill in the blanks on a cloze activity using the four medicine warning labels that were discussed in class. For lower level learners, provide a word bank at the bottom of the worksheet. Omit the word bank for more advanced student. 4.3 WIPPEA: Evaluation Application Evaluation Practice Presentation Introduction Warm Up WIPPEA TEAL Center Fact Sheet : Effective Lesson Planning

Open Math Module Integrating OER Into Your Lesson Plan What informs your use of OER and other materials and resources for the lesson? Objectives, Instructional & Assessment Strategies Open Educational Resources

Open Math Module Integrating OER Into Your Lesson Plan What informs your use of OER and other materials and resources for the lesson? Objectives, Instructional & Assessment Strategies Open Educational Resources

Open Math Module 3  Six step process for creating open lessons with OER  Based on Gagne’s nine events of instruction  An approach to planning lessons with an understanding of individual learners’ needs Click any step for more information 5.1 Six Steps to ASSURE Learning The ASSURE Model Analyze learners State objectives Select media & materials Utilize media & materials Require learner participation Evaluate and revise

Open Math Module 3 Analyze Learners Determine what your learners must know, what they do know, their attitudes and learning preferences. Assess how ready your learners are for self-study, remixing and revising OER and sharing online. 5.1 Six Steps to ASSURE Learning The ASSURE Model Analyze learners State objectives Select media & materials Utilize media & materials Require learner participation Evaluate and revise

Open Math Module 3 State Objectives Identify specifically what the learner will be able to do as an outcome of instruction. Your objectives should include an observable behavior, the context in which the behavior will be evaluated, and what constitutes acceptable performance. 5.1 Six Steps to ASSURE Learning The ASSURE Model Analyze learners State objectives Select media & materials Utilize media & materials Require learner participation Evaluate and revise

Open Math Module 3 Select Media & Materials Identify appropriate materials, including OER and any supplemental resources, to use or modify for the lesson or create new materials. 5.1 Six Steps to ASSURE Learning The ASSURE Model Analyze learners State objectives Select media & materials Utilize media & materials Require learner participation Evaluate and revise

Open Math Module 3 Utilize Media & Materials Preview and practice utilizing selected OER and other materials to determine how they will be used by students. Adjust the lesson plan as needed based on your preview of materials. Prepare the learning environment, students, and materials, then begin the lesson. Note: This step requires the teacher to use media and materials before teaching the lesson. 5.1 Six Steps to ASSURE Learning The ASSURE Model Analyze learners State objectives Select media & materials Utilize media & materials Require learner participation Evaluate and revise

Open Math Module 3 Require Learner Participation Provide learners with an opportunity to practice and apply what they’ve learned through the use of OER and other materials. Observe or monitor student performance and provide feedback to help students meet the lesson objectives. 5.1 Six Steps to ASSURE Learning The ASSURE Model Analyze learners State objectives Select media & materials Utilize media & materials Require learner participation Evaluate and revise

Open Math Module 3 Evaluate and Revise During instruction, continuously assess learners’ progress with meeting expected outcomes and use of the media and materials. After instruction, evaluate whether the learners met objectives, how learners were able to use media and materials, and how well the materials supported students in meeting the objectives. Adjust the lesson as needed before using it again. 5.1 Six Steps to ASSURE Learning The ASSURE Model Analyze learners State objectives Select media & materials Utilize media & materials Require learner participation Evaluate and revise

Open Math Module 3 A Lesson Plan Using the ASSURE Model Analyze learners State objectives Select media & materials How do you use your iPad? The audience is adult basic education students. These students may have not studied the mathematical content of this lesson is some time and thus one must plan content that scaffolds throughout the lesson. The desired outcomes for this lesson is for adult learners to be able to use a model (OER) to find the percent of a region. I selected two distinct OER in this lesson. One as an introduction to review rational numbers and engage the learner. The second OER is used as a real world visual (iPad screen shot) during the presentation of the lesson. Download Lesson Plan 6.0 Six Steps to ASSURE Learning: In Context

Open Math Module 3 Evaluate and revise Require learner participation Utilize media & materials I supplemented the OER with direct instruction during the presentation and practice parts of the lesson. Learners will engage with the OER during the presentation and will ultimately check their work with additional screen shots provided by the OER. Learners will then be asked to design their own visual based on their preferences of iPad usage. I may have to adjust the lesson to use whole numbers measurements rather than rational numbers based on the outcome of the lesson. I may also consider using some of the learner created iPad visuals in future lessons. 6.1 Six Steps to ASSURE Learning: In Context A Lesson Plan Using the ASSURE Model How do you use your iPad? Download Lesson Plan

Open Math Module Summary Begin with the end in mind Tie OER use to learner objectives Select materials and teaching strategies that permit you and learners to leverage the 5Rs

Open Math Module Summary Adapt lesson planning frameworks to design lessons with OER Use lesson planning models like ASSURE and WIPPEA to develop lessons that meet the specific needs of you learners Keep in mind that these models and frameworks are fluid

Open Math Module Summary Lesson planning is not always linear Lesson planning is continuous and iterative. The frameworks presented in the module raise important considerations for open lessons.

Open Math Module 3 ? 7.1 Questions for Reflection How much is instruction driven by OER selection or your lesson plan? What approach would you use to select and integrate an OER into instruction? How would you remix or revise ASSURE to create an approach that works for you and your learners? What is your general process for planning and delivering instruction? In what ways, if any, does the information thus far change your practice?
