Thin Cylinders (Examples) ME213 Solid Mechanics5 Example 1 A thin cylinder 75mm internal diameter, 250mm long with walls 2.5mm thick is subjected to an internal pressure of 7MN/m 2. Determine the change in internal diameter, the change in length, hoop stress & longitudinal stress (E = 200 GPa & =0.3). If, in addition to the internal pressure, the cylinder is subjected to a torque of 200 Nm, find the magnitude and nature of the principal stresses set up in the cylinder.

Thin Cylinders (Examples) ME213 Solid Mechanics6 In addition to these stresses a shear stress τ is set up.

Thin Cylinders (Examples) ME213 Solid Mechanics7 From the theory of torsion, Where, R is outer Radius and J is Polar moment of Inertia of hollow shaft Now,
