Vocabulary Words to Know captive captive primitive primitive companionship sanctuaries sanctuaries existence stimulating ordeal Focus Question: Why is it important to study animals responsibly?

Poster Talk Through Think, Pair, Share Here is a polar bear sanctuary. Animal sanctuaries are places that help to protect animals. In earlier and more primitive times, animals’ lives and environments were much less affected by humans. Some animals in sanctuaries have experienced an ordeal, a difficult situation, and have been rescued. These two polar bears were abandoned when they were cubs. Although they are captive and not free to roam, they have a safe existence. The sanctuaries are designed to give the animals special care. Animals in sanctuaries also have companionship of other animals. The sanctuaries can also provide stimulating activities that animals find interesting. A scientist is studying the bears here. I wonder what she is learning about them?

Authors may write to persuade, to inform, to express ideas or feelings, or to entertain If you know the author’s purpose, you can adjust how you read. If the purpose is to entertain, you can chose to read faster. If the purpose is to inform, you want to read more slowly.
