3 Poster Talk Through Think, Pair, Share Sarah went to a summer history camp, students lived as people did in Colonial times. A counselor at the camp explained how young people’s adult lives were shaped. A person’s identity was often based on his or her parents’ role in life. For example, a shoemaker’s son also became a shoemaker. Women and girls spent most of their time preparing food or making clothing. Any surplus, or extra, food was preserved for the winter. Life required much physical labor, such as chopping wood and hauling water. When Sarah returned home, she noticed how much easier life is today because of modern technology. She drinks water from a faucet. She buys food at a store. She cooks on a stove. A furnace, not a fire, keeps her warm.
