PS Orbit Second year of TMS Operation Stéphane Bart Pedersen BE-BI-SW July BE-BI-SW July 2013

Old PS Orbit ( CODD ) sys tem Before the TMS Trajectories from the 40 pickups, for max 2 turns and one bunch at a given CTIM Trajectories from the 40 pickups, for max 2 turns and one bunch at a given CTIM Mean Radial Position acquired along the cycle every 5ms Mean Radial Position acquired along the cycle every 5ms 2/15 Old CODD OP application

Obsolete acquisition hardware Trajectories retrieved only with CTIM in ms Critical periods ( injection, transition, extraction, bunch rotation ) Difficult to analyze with only 2 turns Difficult to analyze with only 2 turns Important phases at injection already finished after 5ms Important phases at injection already finished after 5ms Low level hardware settings ( gate, BLR… ) To be set manually To be set manually Why a new Acquisition system? 3/15

Trajectory Measurement System Provided by an external company Provided by an external company Analogue signals from 40 BPMs digitized Analogue signals from 40 BPMs digitized 14 modules distributed over 3 cPCI crates 14 modules distributed over 3 cPCI crates Firmware under the responsibility of BE-BI-PI Firmware under the responsibility of BE-BI-PI Setting and continuous acquisition Setting and continuous acquisition 3s buffer acquired by a server ( Linux PC ) 3s buffer acquired by a server ( Linux PC )   Project leader : J. Some improvements with Respect to the old CODD On-demand oscilloscope-like diagnostic Analyze and tuning of the injection Bump synchronization more easy Bunch behavior before extraction Automatic low-level settings depending on the harmonic number 8/15 Raw sigma Gate bucket 1 Diagnostic

New types of Operation Visualization and optimization of critical processes 5000 turns per cycle in one shot 5000 turns per cycle in one shot Beam steering ( YASP ) using up to 20 first turn trajectories turn trajectories New MTE observation Evolution of the islands Evolution of the islands 9/15 Happy operators Injection

Screenshots ( from cpsop elogbook ) MTE islands (X/X’ 3D plot) Trajectories at C240 There is a problem… MTE islands lost! (X/X’ 3D plot) Trajectories used for the steering (YASP plot) 10/15

Problem observed during MTE Studies ( A. Lachaize ) 11/15 TMS server PU Pre- Amplifier cPCI crate ∑, Δx, Δy Linux PC VME crate (MENA20 CPU) CPU TRX Prepare next cycle Raw data Gain setting Raw data H,V positions 2 sets of standard deviations in the islands. Up to 1.8mm! Pre-amplifier settings are function to intensity range. Saturation or lack of sensitivity if intensity near the range level ! (1e9 – 5e9 - 1e10 – 5e10 - 1e11…)  sigma oscillation

Solution proposed in agreement With BE/OP and BE/ABP Old hardware and PPM settings impossible to be changed Workaround Dedicated MTE application written in Java with on-demand data export to file during a selected cycle Dedicated MTE application written in Java with on-demand data export to file during a selected cycle Separated plots per island + 3D X/X’ plots Separated plots per island + 3D X/X’ plots Selection of the measurement type to be acquired (raw sigma or calculated positions) Selection of the measurement type to be acquired (raw sigma or calculated positions) On-the-fly FFT (using sigma in FESA) to detect oscillation On-the-fly FFT (using sigma in FESA) to detect oscillation  Data qualification (oscillating / not oscillating) Filter to export or not data in the MTE GUI Filter to export or not data in the MTE GUI 12/15

What is being done/studied During LS1? 13/15 TMS server PU Pre- Amplifier cPCI crate ∑, Δx, Δy Linux PC VME crate (MENA20 CPU) CPU TRX Prepare next cycle Raw data Gain setting Raw data H,V positions 3 new PUs in WS ( ) New communication library with TMS Direct Ethernet 1Gb/s connection between VME and TMS Adjustment Pre-amplifier settings

Conclusions Successful project Very good collaboration inside BE Very good collaboration inside BE Interesting partnership with an external company Interesting partnership with an external company System that will be re-used in the PSB (after LS1 : one ring to be acquired in // with the old acq. system) Handling of old electronics (ex : pre-amplifiers) not straightforward Expert GUI used a lot BUT do OP need a more easy dedicated OP application? Performances to be increased if possible 14/15

Thank you!
