Concepto: los superlativos

What you will find in this presentation: 1. Review: Comparatives 2. Creating a Superlative 3. Special Superlative Words 4. Adjectives, Comparatives and Superlatives 5. Practice Exercises

Comparative Adjectives compare two nouns. When making a comparative in English, we use two methods. 1. Adding “er” to an adjective 2. Saying something is more or less than something else. In Spanish, we use the latter: by saying something is more or less than something else. Example: He is more tall than she. Él es más alto que ella. Él es más alto que ella. Example: They are less prepared than we. Ellos son menos preparados de nosotros. Ellos son menos preparados de nosotros.

Superlatives- These are adjectives that are either the most or least of something. They are formed similarly to comparatives, except that they do not actually compare to another noun. 1. Superlatives require the use of a definite pronoun. This is the same for English. 2. Example: He is the nicest. 3. Example: She is the thinnest. 4. Example: They are the tallest. In Spanish, we place the article before “más” or “menos”. Example: He is the tallest. Él es el más alto. Él es el más alto.

Definite Articles- In English, the word “the” is the only definite article. It specifies an object. In Spanish, we know that articles are special adjectives. All adjectives must agree in gender and number; therefore, the article must agree with the noun. 1. Example: He is the tallest. Él es el más alto. Masculine / Singular Él es el más alto. Masculine / Singular 2. Example: She is the tallest. Ella es la más alta. Feminine / Singular Ella es la más alta. Feminine / Singular 3. Example: John and Paul are the tallest. John y Paul son los más altos. Masculine / Plural John y Paul son los más altos. Masculine / Plural 4. Example: Mary and Susan are the tallest. Mary y Susan son las más altas. Feminine / Plural Mary y Susan son las más altas. Feminine / Plural

In Spanish, when learning comparatives, we learned that there are four special comparative words that do not require “más” or “menos”. These special words repeat with superlatives. 1. mayor - older 2. menor - younger 3. mejor - better 4. peor - worse When we place a definite article (el, la, los, las) in front of these special words, they change their meaning. 1. el mayor - the oldest 2. el menor - the youngest 3. el mejor - the best 4. el peor - the worst Note: As with comparatives, these words can become plural, but not feminine as they end in consonants. Therefore, they are gender neutral.

1. Example: He is the oldest. Él es el mayor. Masculine / Singular Él es el mayor. Masculine / Singular 2. Example: She is the oldest. Ella es la mayor. Feminine / Singular Ella es la mayor. Feminine / Singular 3. Example: John and Paul are the oldest. John y Paul son los mayores. Masculine / Plural John y Paul son los mayores. Masculine / Plural 4. Example: Mary and Susan are the oldest. Mary y Susan son las mayores. Feminine / Plural Mary y Susan son las mayores. Feminine / Plural
