Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI EGO Workshop, January Background This model builds on the initial EGO paper, input received from EGEE federations and discussions from the first day of this workshop –Assumes EGO and NGIs will support a multitude of user communities and applications of various sizes (from large structured communities such as HEP to modest collaborations of 2 or 3 research groups) –Number of questions still to be addressed EGO: European Grid Organisation –Working title to identify a consortium of partners involved in EGEE/EGEE-II NGI: National Grid Initiatives/Infrastructures –Bodies which inter-operate to establish pan-European eInfrastructure  Maturity of NGIs across Europe varies significantly Need to compare NGI concept to that high-performance computing (HPC) views  A goal of EGO is to encourage and aid the formation of NGIs Added value of EGO is to coordinate the inter-operation of the NGIs

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI EGO Workshop, January EGO Key Services EGO provides the following services in coordination with the NGIs Operation of Infrastructure Coordinates the inter-operation of resources managed by the NGIs Does not own significant computing resources Coordinates the managed upgrades of services deployed by NGIs Coordinates the grid security (incident response etc.) Negotiates resources for user communities/VOs across NGIs General management of the User Support process Interaction point with GEANT Provides documentation for end users and resource providers Middleware testing and certification Integrates middleware from other sources to produce distributions Provides first-level middleware support team Operates beta-test services for upcoming distributions

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI EGO Workshop, January EGO/NGIs and industry Business model for how industry can make commercial use of a shared infrastructure managed by EGO/NGIs is unclear –Will not have mechanisms by which clients could “buy” resources at the end of EGEE-II (2007) –Use of GEANT network for commercial application is restricted Likely to see adoption/”internalisation” of EGO/NGI backed products and services (e.g. middleware, operations procedures/techniques) –For multi-site corporate usage or to offer a service to a set of SMEs –Already enquires about training/consultancy possibilities Industry could contribute to EGO via manpower (transfer of knowledge), sponsorship (equipment, etc.) EGO/NGIs could subcontract some of the infrastructure support work to industry and make use of commercial software as standards evolve

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI EGO Workshop, January EGO Funding and Governance Funding –Initial “seed money” required  To come from major NGIs –EU co-funding (FP7)  Proposal(s) submitted by EGO/NGIs highlighting the coordination role of EGO and the interoperation/connection of NGIs –Technology transfer to bring additional manpower/money to EGO:  As CERN openlab does now and/or Marie-Curie Transfer of Knowledge programme Governance –EGO would be an organisation with its own legal identity  Hosted at CERN during its initial stage  Limited resources compared those of the NGIs  A goal of the first phase is to find its own premises –EGO would have its own management structure  NGIs would be part of governing council A seat for each NGI that signs agreement with EGO

To what extent should EGO be involved in grid development (middleware etc.)? –How much influence do we have over grid R&D projects? How can we best secure support of eIRG and ESFRI? Can NGIs be directly funded by the EU? How will user communities be represented in the EGO/NGI model? What added-value proposition can be made to industry/business? –Relations to NESSI?
