Learning About History  During this unit, we will learn about the Revolutionary War and about slavery from historical fiction and nonfiction.  Objective: We will be able to describe historical fiction, primary and secondary sources of nonfiction, and the difference between fact and opinions.

Historical Fiction  Definition:  An imaginary story that takes place in a real time period from the past

Historical Fiction  Characters:  All behave in realistic ways  May be real, fictional, or based on real people

Historical Fiction  Dialogue:  Words spoken by characters  Reflect the knowledge and thoughts of people from that time period

Historical Fiction  Setting:  Time – authentic time period in history  Place – a real historical place  Ex: Boston, 1630 or after

Historical Fiction  Plot:  Based on real events mixed with fictional events  The fictional events must be realistic

Historical Fiction  Conflict:  The characters face problems that are realistic

Historical Fiction  Even though it is imaginary, the story must be plausible (reasonable) and realistic to the time period

Nonfiction  Definition:  Writing or media based on facts, real events, or real people

Primary Sources  Definition:  A document or physical object that was written or created during the time period under study

Primary Sources  Examples:  Letters, speeches, diaries, newspaper articles from the time period, interviews with people from the time period, documents, photographs, artifacts

Secondary Sources  Definition:  A source that analyzes and interprets primary sources  Not directly from the time period under study

Secondary Sources  Examples:  History books, textbooks, encyclopedias, websites, educational magazines, documentaries

Understanding Check  What is the difference between nonfiction and historical fiction?

Fact vs. Opinion  People have different perspectives on historical events.  When learning from historical fiction and nonfiction texts, you must constantly evaluate whether you are learning facts or opinions.

Fact  Definition:  A statement that can be proven or checked

Opinion  Definition:  A statement that shows what the writer thinks, believes, or feels about a subject  It cannot be proven

Fact vs. Opinion Examples  The Revolutionary War started on April 19,  Historical fiction is the best genre of literature.  Chains is a fantastic book.  In Chains, the main character’s name is Isabel.
