Why Project Based Learning?

 "Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results." - John Dewey

Why Project Based Learning?  "Inquiry-driven and project-based learning makes sense for today's learners because it gives them the opportunity to connect the work they do in school with the larger world around them. We must stop saying that school is "preparation for real life" and acknowledge that school is real life for the kids while they are in it. Project-based learning allows that to happen in powerful, meaningful ways.“ Chris Lehman  "Inquiry-driven and project-based learning makes sense for today's learners because it gives them the opportunity to connect the work they do in school with the larger world around them. What Does PBL look like?

An Elementary PBL Product

What is Project Based Learning?  Project-Based Learning is simply offering authentic, inquiry-based activities for learners to access content, share ideas, and revisit their own thinking.

Projects vs. Project Based Learning  Project-Based Learning is about the process, and projects are about the product that comes at the end. Project-Based Learning often requires students not simply to collect resources, organize work, and manage long-term activities, but also to collaborate, design, revise, and share their ideas and experiences with authentic audiences and supportive peer groups.

Why Tech for PBL?  PBL Helps Students Develop Skills for Living in a Knowledge-Based, Highly Technological Society  PBL Asks a Question or Poses a Problem That Each Student Can Answer  PBL Asks Students to Investigate Issues and Topics Addressing Real-World Problems While Integrating Subjects Across the Curriculum  PBL Helps Students Develop Skills for Living in a Knowledge-Based, Highly Technological Society  PBL Asks a Question or Poses a Problem That Each Student Can Answer  PBL Asks Students to Investigate Issues and Topics Addressing Real-World Problems While Integrating Subjects Across the Curriculum

Where do I begin?  Start with a “Big” Question based on TNReady Standards  Design a plan for the project. Include students in this planning process. Integrate as many academic disciplines as possible.  Create a schedule with benchmarks.  Monitor student progress along the way.  Create rubric to assess learning outcomes.  Evaluate the overall effectiveness of the project and make adjustments.  Start with a “Big” Question based on TNReady Standards  Design a plan for the project.
