Keys At GCSE you need to make sure you are familiar with the keys that use up to 4 sharps and 4 flats. A key signature found at the start of music tells you what key you are in and what sharps or flats to perform in the piece. # # b b b

Order of Sharps are: You learnt this for homework!

Order of Sharps # F sharp # # F & C sharp # # # F, C & G sharp # # # # F, C, G & D sharp

Quick way of working out key signatures for sharps # F sharp – G major # # F & C sharp – D major # # # F, C & G sharp – A major # # # # F, C, G & D sharp – E major Go up a semitone after the last sharp.

Check the key signatures by working out scales using TTSTTTS as you have been shown. # F sharp – G major # # F & C sharp – D major # # # F, C & G sharp – A major # # # # F, C, G & D sharp – E major Go up a semitone after the last sharp.

What key has nothing in the key signature?

C major

Flats are more difficult. There is no easy way to learn flat key signatures. You simply have to learn them parrot fashion or by remembering the following. What is the order of flats in a key signature?

Flats b b b b b b b b b b Bb (B flat) Bb & Eb Bb, Eb & Ab Bb, Eb, Ab & Db

Flat Key signatures REMEMBER C major has nothing, then count up in 4’s from C to work out flat keys (include C as 1). F major has 1 flat (Bb) – now count up 4 from F Bb major has 2 flats (Bb, Eb) – count up 4 from B Eb major has 3 flats (Bb,Eb,Ab) etc Ab major has 4 flats (Bb, Eb, Ab, Db)

Learn this melody (e) 5(d) (e) 5(d) ghigh G hand position Task 1.Learn to perform this tune 2.Find chords to play with this tune. Either 1 chord per bar or 1 chord for 2 notes 3.Don’t forget cadences and where they might appear 4.Work out the key signature. This will help you choose the right scale to find your chords # #
