May pre GDB WLCG services post EGEE Josva Kleist Michael Grønager Software Coord NDGF Director CERN, May 12 th 2009

2 NDGF background Collaboration between 4 NGIs  Plan for a continuation being made Fits into the EGI/NGI setup Based heavily on the existing organization and collaborations Funding secured till end of 2010 NDGF already highly sustainable due to close connection to the resource centers Most of the staff is “on loan” to NDGF from permanent positions elsewhere

NDGF Facility Q1

NDGF People Q1

5 The Principle of Subsidiarity From europa.eu:  The fundamental doctrine or tenet that policy making decisions should be made at the most decentralized level, in which a centralized governing body would not take action unless it it is more effective than action taken at a lower government level 4 categories:  Local – at sites – considered covered by local funds  National – NGI tasks – could, for practical reasons collaborate on regional level  Regional – NDGF / ROC – coordination of operation, tools, regional communities  Global – central services, higher level coordination

6 Operation (GGUS, COD/ROC, EIS, ENOC) Collaboration between Nordic EGEE-SA1 and NDGF  Nordic Tier-1 and all Nordic/Baltic Tier-2 and EGEE sites operated in collaboration between NDGF and NE-ROC Shifts every other week EGEE / NDGF people co-located Weekends off-hours by NDGF / NORDUnet staff  Plan to continue the collaboration also after EGEE-III (in EGI), otherwise scaled down a bit to only NDGF staff  Tickets: Regional things in NORDUnet ticketing system Global things stays in GGUS (no double ticketing)  Entire Tier-1 and some Tier-2 sites double monitored by Nordic Nagios and EGEE SAM

7 Operation Tools (APEL, VOMS, GOCDB, CIC-P, GridView) APEL: Regionally developed accounting system, collab. with DEISA, OGF-UR based, insertion in APEL as today. VOMS: Central and regional GOCDB: Needed and considered a “central” service CIC Portal: recently regionalized – fine tool for operation GridView: Our customer metric – need to stay external / central SAM/Nagios: Should be regional, nagios based – no need for double tools Dashboards: VO / Community specific

8 Middleware Philosophy: As an infrastructure we need “tools”, for which we have to “pay”. Payment can be in “cash” (commercial tools) or in kind (open source) – so we contribute to what we use – main users = main contributors. dCache: Well established OS model – “users” contribute ARC: Contribution from “users” (NDGF, CSCS, IJS, others) and research projects (KnowARC, NgiN, others). gLite (mainly FTS, LFC): HEP/CERN are main users of this. UMD: Interoperable Multipurpose Distribution (for everything from HPC to HTC)

9 Conclusion Business as usual ! NDGF is not dependent on EGEE funding NDGF, as just a regional collaboration of four NGI for the mutual benefit of those, fit fine into the EGI model WLCG obligations not endangered

10 Thanks! Questions ?
