Romanticism Defined: Romantic has come to mean basically two things: 1. The loving or potentially loving relationships between individuals. 2. A way of looking at the world that looks beyond, or ignores, the world as it is and perceives a visionary world.

Romanticism and Rebellion: Causes: The French Revolution intended to create a new society, but instead led to France into a military dictatorship. (Napoleon) The Enlightenment thinkers, (Locke, Newton) placed heavy focus on rational and scientific thought. Effect Romanticism was an artistic movement that countered the rigidity of the time.

Characteristics of Romantic Poetry Common themes:  appreciation of nature  renewed interest in religion  the common man  death and mortality  the innocence of youth Each poet had his own style and emphasized different aspects.

Romantic Era-Forms of Poetry Lyric- emphasizing sound, figurative language and imagery Sonnet-14 line poem, with a particular rhyme scheme Elegy-a poem about mourning Ode-long, elevated in style, dedicated to someone or something.
