1 The Romantic Period. By April and Alfie.

2 Context. The Romantic Period was particularly interested in the mysterious & supernatural, this made it quite similar to the gothic genre, due to the fact that it also included themes of madness and death as well as extremes of passion. The Romantic Period was within the Victorian Era. During the Romantic Period, social class was very important, there were three social classes; Higher and Upper Middle, Middle, and then the lower class.

3 Key Events. The Spinning Frame- An industrial revolution for spinning thread or yarn from fibres such as wool or cotton in 18th century Britain. (1769) The French Revolution- An influential period of social and political upheaval in France. ( ) The Industrial Revolution- A transition into new manufacturing processes in the period. ( /40) The Reform Bill- A social movement that aims to make gradual change in certain aspects of society. (1832)

Samuel Taylor Coleridge ( ) – “Kubla Khan” and Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Poet of the imagination. George Gordon, Lord Byron ( ) – “She Walks in Beauty” and Childe Harolds Pilgramage. Poet. Percy Bysshe Shelley ( ) – “Ode to the West Wind”. Romantic Revolutionary. John Keats ( ) – “La Belle Dame Sans Merci” Greatest romantic poet?

5 Why is it Romantic? It's not the current, standardised meaning of "romantic," with hearts and flowers and candlelight. The Romantic period in literature includes works that involve a lot of personal rather than universal ideas/beliefs/thoughts. Romanticism is emotional, hence "horror and melancholy," although there are other emotions, too.
