CHEMICAL SHIPPING & RECEIVING PROCEDURES Hazardous/Non-hazardous

INTRODUCTION - 1 out every 4 workers contacts chemicals on the job. - In most cases, work chemicals are no more dangerous than household type. - Workplace situations could be of a greater exposure time and higher concentrations. - Regulations for shipping & handling are covered by OSHA, EPA & DOT.

PHYSICAL HAZARDS PHYSICAL: Exhibited by certain chemicals due to physical properties (flammability, reactivity,etc.). These fall into several classes ……. - Flammable liquids/solids ………….. Gas, Diesel - Combustible liquids ………………… Solvents, MEK - Compressed gases ………………….. Propane

HEALTH HAZARDS HEALTH: Chemical that may cause acute or chronic effects after exposure. - Acute effects usually occur rapidly, after a brief exposure. - Chronic effects are long, continuous and follows repeated long term exposure. Examples: Toxic agents ………… fertilizers, insecticides Irritants …………….. Bleaches, ammonia

CHEMICALS IN TORO’S WORKPLACE PHYSICAL HAZARDS - MEK - Oils (hydraulic, motor, grease) - Compressed gases (Oxygen, propane, helium, Argon) - Paints (spray cans, oil based enamels) HEALTH HAZARDS - MEK - Acids (Hydrochloric)

MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS A fact sheet for chemicals that pose a physical or health hazard in the workplace. They are in English and cover: - Identity of the chemical (as used on the label) - Physical hazards - Health hazards - Primary routes of entry - Whether it is a carcinogen - Precautions for safe handling and use - Date of preparation/revision - Name, address, phone number of manufacturer, importer or distributor.

MSDS CONTINUED MSDS inventory for chemicals kept on file at Riverside: - Molding - SMU1, 2, Controllers, Tool Room, Retail - Maintenance, Jasmine & Perkic Whse. - Security Office (Master Files) Responsibility of Toro contact and vendor to supply MSDS when any new chemical is introduced to workplace, regardless of quantity.

LABELS & LABELING REQUIREMENTS Chemical containers must be labeled in English. Other languages can be used, but English is required. Labels are required to have the following: - Identity of the chemical (hazardous or non-hazardous) - Appropriate hazard warnings - Name & address of manufacturer, importer, distributor

SHIPPING /RECEIVING REQUIREMENTS Dept. of Transportation requires that ALL hazardous chemical shipments be properly labeled as to the type and hazard (Code of Federal Regulations 49 - T ransportation). Hazardous chemicals CANNOT be transported or received unless proper labeling & paperwork is included: - DOT warning placards/labels - Shipping paperwork - MSDS

MATERIAL HANDLING Prevention of incidents includes use of the proper equipment and procedures to handle chemicals: - Safety glasses, gloves - Forklifts - Hand Trucks - Pallet jacks - DOT, OSHA, EPA or Toro procedures.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE Only those trained in emergency response procedures should handle any type of incident. TYPES OF INCIDENTS - Spills - Explosions - Fires - Damaged shipments Incident response equipment is located at designated locations within the facility (yellow barrels, fire extinguishers). Those trained in response procedures are: - Facilities Maintenance - Mold Maintenance - SecurityStaff

WORK AT WORKING SAFELY... - Training and awareness is the key to success and safety when having to ship or receive chemicals in the workplace. - Take the program information seriously. - Learn about MSDS, labeling, and proper handling methods. Refer to the TORO Hazardous Materials Transportation Guidance Manual, Facility Safety Rules, CFR 49-Transportation for questions, or your Team Leader. - Your safety and that of others, may depend on how much you learn.
