British Values Calmore Junior School

We teach and promote the concept of DEMOCRACY through Electing a School Council and following democratic processes in running the Council Electing our School House Captains Consulting pupils, parents/carers through questionnaires on a range of topics Following the class charter that they have designed themselves Appointing and training Play Leaders to assist in supporting games and activities at playtimes and lunchtimes Applying peer assessment to identified work Learning about democracy in Ancient Greece in year 6 topic Year 6 worked in groups to plan an afternoon’s lessons, presented them to the rest of year 6 and they voted for their favourite Golden Time activities and treats voted and chosen for by the children Our PHSE curriculum Shaping the curriculum Teaching children to children to respect public institutions and services Taking part in the Hampshire Illustrated Book award where they have to vote for their favourite book based on merits (Year 4/5) Seeking children’s’ views and opinions on a range of school and community issues All parents, carers and children can read class/school blogs and make comments on learning at Calmore

We teach and promote THE RULE OF LAW through Our School Behaviour Policy- Sanctions and Rewards School assemblies and PHSE Literacy lessons; opportunities for debating, learning how to argue and defend ideas and views SEAL assemblies; reflecting on right from wrong and consequences Understanding the importance of laws and why they are enforced Teaching the rules of the school through the class charters, assemblies, school behaviour policy, home school agreement, e- safety talks and everyday life modelled by the staff. Teaching the value and reasons behind rules and laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message

We teach and promote the concept INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY through Pupil responsibilities of being monitors, buddy readers, librarians Providing a wide range of enrichment activities which children can choose from E Safety and Safeguarding lessons and activities including working with other services such as the police and fire brigade PHSE lessons; keeping safe from harm Children choosing their own level of challenge in some lessons Anti-Bullying work Calmore has a robust anti bullying culture and behaviour and safety policies in place Year 5 wrote letters to end child slavery
