Presentation transcript:

Freewriting Prewriting refers to the range of activities in which the writer engages before setting fingers on the keyboard (or pen to paper). Types of prewriting include:freewriting, brainstorming/listing, clustering/mapping, Asking Questions, Outlining

Freewriting Freewriting helps you identify subjects in which you are interested. Allows you to generate thoughts that will help you formulate ideas to write about. Put your pen to the paper and begin to write. Do not stop to think, organize, critique, etc. – Just Write! Write as fast as you can, the faster the better.

Freewriting is a famous prewriting technique proposed by Peter Elbow. It is similar to brainstorming but requires more sustained writing

writing everything that comes to your mind grammar without being concerned with spelling it involves four steps

Write the topic of your composition on top of the page.

Write as much as you can, until you run out of ideas. Include facts, details and examples.

Only after you run out of ideas, stop, reread your paper and circle the ideas you would like to further develop.

Rewrite the idea(s) you circled as your new title, and start freewriting again.

A Memorable Event in My Life I am supposed to freewrite for ten minutes about a memorable event in my life. I don't Know what to write about. Maybe about my brother's boat accident. We were so scared. We thought he was going to drown. He was trapped under an overturned boat and didn't have any air to breathe. But it ended all right.

He was rescued and had only a broken arm. What else can I write about? Oh! I know. A day I will always remember was the day I left my country to come to the United States. That was a sad/happy day. I felt sad and happy at the same time. Maybe I should write about something happy. Our family vacation last summer was fun. We drove to the coast and camped for a week on the beach

Then there was the day the earthquake happened. Now that was definitely a memorable event. I will never forget it. I was at home with my older sister and little brother....

This writer freewrote until she found a good topic: the earthquake. If she had wanted to, she could have done further freewriting about her earthquake experience T ry it out!
