Shadows Note the shadow differences with a small light source vs. a large light source

Shadows Penumbra – the outer shadow, where the object creating the shadow (Moon or Earth) blocks only part of the Sun’s rays from the other object. Umbra – the inner shadow, the region where the object creating the shadow completely blocks out the Sun’s rays from the other object

Which is the Solar Eclipse and which is the Lunar Eclipse?

Lunar Eclipses When the moon is in the Earth’s shadow (umbra). Only occur at the Full Moon phase and only if the Moon passes through some portion of the Earth’s shadow.

Types of Lunar Eclipses Partial Lunar Eclipse – When a portion of the Moon passes through Earth’s umbral shadow Total Lunar Eclipse – When the entire moon passes through the Earth’s umbral shadow Next Lunar Eclipse???

Solar Eclipses When the Earth is in the Moon’s shadow Only occur at New Moon, when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth.

Types of Solar Eclipses Partial Solar Eclipse – when only the Moon’s penumbral shadow strikes Earth Total Solar Eclipse – very brief, when the Moon’s dark umbral shadow moves across the Earth’s surface
