Translation 1. 谁能想出一个好办法来解决这个问 题? Who can come up with a good idea to solve this problem? 2. 他们的想法跟我们的截然不同。 Their ideas are quite alien to our own.

3. 他梦想当一名医生。 He dreams of being a doctor. 4. 艰苦的工作条件能磨炼人的性格。 Hard working conditions build up character.

5. 即使她邀请我, 我也不去参加这个 聚会。 Even if she invites me, I won ’ t go to her party.

Writing on P21 Talk about the two students’ ideas on P21 and write a play. Writing tips 1. Write an outline of the play. 2. Decide what each person should be like.

3. Write down the dialogue. 4. Decide which role each group member will play.

One possible version for the first story: A girl named Allan (A) has come back and is talking to her grandmother (G). G: (The doorbell rings) Who is it? A: Grandma, it is me, Allan. G: I won ’ t believe it. Where have you been? I haven ’ t seen you for ages.

A: Yeah. That ’ s true. Grandma, you know, when I was on my way to see you, I met an alien. He took me to his spaceship and reached the future a thousand years later. G: Really? Are you dreaming? A: Granny, I am telling the truth. You know, I am always honest.

G: What have you seen there? A: Well, what I see there is completely different from now. There is no noise, no pollution and no war. We can see blue sky and clear water here and there. G: Tell me more!

A: Well, every nation lives at peace with one another. People are living a happy life. G: I don ’ t think I ’ ll believe you. A: (Very excited) Grandma, just believe me. That ’ s true, really.

One possible version for the second story: A girl named Dorothy (D) is on her way to school when she meets a clone (C). C: Hi, Dorothy. Nice to meet you. D: (A bit surprised) Why? I don ’ t think I know you. How come you know my name?

C: Can ’ t you see I am exactly like you? D: Really? (Feel a bit more surprised and stare at her.) C: Who are you? Where on earth are you from?

C: (Astonished) What? Live with me? You are mad. (Begin to run faster towards her school.) (At noon, at Dorothy ’ s home.) D: (Knock at the door.) C: Oh, it ’ s Dorothy.

D: (Very astonished and angry.) Go out. I shall never see you again in my home. C: Please be calm, Dorothy. Just treat me as your twin. I shall try to help you deal with all your trouble. Let ’ s be friends. Please believe me.

D: Sounds like a good idea. Well, we shall share one bedroom and my books.

Writing on P84 Discuss the following situations and create a short play. (P84) 1. Mathilde talks to her husband the morning after she lost the necklace. 2. Mathlde has just found out that the lost necklace was made of glass.

Steps 1. Discuss what happens to them; 2. Write down the outlines; 3. Write down the dialogue. One possible version for the first story: (At Mathild ’ s home. The next morning after she lost her necklace.)

M: I ’ m really sorry, Pierre. It is my fault. P: Well, my dear. Since it is really gone, let ’ s try to find ways out. What can we do next? M: (Very sad.) What about buying a new diamond necklace?

P: You mean to buy a new one and return it to Jeanne? M: Yes. P: But it will cost a lot of money! M: Well, how about working hard to earn money. Then we can buy a new one and give it back to Jeanne.

P: But that will take many, many years. M: Then what can we do, Pierre? P: I think we ’ d better borrow some money, and buy a new diamond necklace for Jeanne. Then we can try to find more work so that we can pay off our debts as early as possible.

M: I agree with you, my dear. P: (Hug Mathilde.) Though we ’ ll live a hard and poor life, I won ’ t love you any less. M: I ’ m so lucky, Pierre.

One possible version for the second story: (In a park in Paris. Mathilde (M) has just had a conversation with her friend Jeanne (J).) M: (Very excited and angry.) Why didn ’ t you tell me earlier, Jeanne?

J: But how can I know you have returned a real diamond necklace? They are so alike. M: Both my husband and I have lost so much in the past ten years: our happiness, our youth, my beauty...

J: I am terribly sorry, Mathilde. If possible, I ’ ll give the necklace back to you or some money. M: That ’ s kind of you, Jeanne. But on the other hand, I have learned a lot from my own lessons. A person ’ s real happiness does not lie in her

beauty but in the deep trust between couples and the rich fruits harvested by his or her hard work. J: (A bit surprised and look at Mathilde, silent.)

M: I look older than my age. That is true. But I feel sure that I ’ m living happily with my husband Pierre. Please drop in on us whenever it is convenient to you. J: Thank you, Mathilde.
