Mr. Deemer Modern US History

Who? Combined military forces from the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, Australia, France and other nations. The invasion was planned by Allied Commander- in-Chief Gen. Dwight Eisenhower What? Crossed the Channel from England and made an amphibious assault on Hitler’s “fortress Europe.” When? June 6, 1944 Where? The beaches of Normandy France How? On amphibious landing craft with naval and air support.

D-Day Facts: Called “Operation Overlord” The greatest amphibious assault in world history By midnight of the first day, 175,000 troops went ashore along with 50,000 combat vehicles The Germans knew the Allies were coming and opposed them w/ 4 divisions & 1 Panzer Div.

On the first day, 10,000 (6,603 Americans) Allied soldiers were killed. The final figures of killed and wounded when the Allies finally broke out of the Normandy area in late August are to the right. The U.S. easily suffered more killed and wounded than any allied country.
