The American Dream and The Other America

I. The Suburban Lifestyle A)Many White Americans left the cities to move to the suburbs to buy homes and raise families. B) Cities began to lose tax base jobs and consumers causing urban decay

II. Jim Crow South A)The murder of Emmett Till and the failure to convict his murderers brought national attention to the atrocities of the Jim Crow South.

III. Discrimination in Mexican Community A.Many Mexicans who were recruited under the Bracero program and stayed in America when their employment ended. B.Discrimination grows -Operation Wetback- Mass Deportation -Longoria Incident- undertaker in Texas refused to bury Mexican American

IV. Poor Whites A. Many areas of the nation still experienced extreme poverty such as the Appalachian Mountains where 1 out of 3 people lived in poverty 1 average income was 23% lower than the rest of the nation.
