Dewey Decimal Classification Learn Your Way Around the Library Lydia McKeever

What’s with Dewey The purpose of learning the Dewey Decimal Classification system is so that you can effectively know where to find books in the media center. This presentation will illustrate the 10 main classes that Dewey breaks down into and give an example of a book that you can find in that class.

10 Classes 000’s Computer Science, information & general works 100’s Philosophy and psychology 200’s Religion 300’s Social Sciences 400’s Language 500’s Science 600’s Technology 700’s Arts and Recreation 800’s Literature 900’s History and geography

How “Dewey” use These Numbers Call Numbers Along the spine of the books, you will find a small sticker with the call number printed on them. These numbers tell where the books are shelved so that we know where to find them.

000’s Computer Science, Information & General Works To find material covering computer science (how they work), Bibliographies, library information, encyclopedias, magazines, news, and general collections, and etc.

100’s Philosophy and psychology Space, time, emotions, ethics, psychology (science of behavior) and philosophy (study of human cognance).

200’s Religion Books about religion, Concepts of God or Jesus, church and more would be covered under this class.

300’s Social Sciences This class combines society and human nature concepts such as anthropology (science of humanity), education, law, customs and etiquettes and more.

400’s Language Linguistics (study of natural language), writing systems, phonics, grammar, and more.

500’s Science Astronomy (space), physics (gas, solid, liquid), plants, and animals.

600’s Technology Inventions, medicine, agriculture, food and drinks, manufacturing (use of machines and tools), and buildings can be found in this class.

700’s Arts and Recreation Many different forms and kinds of art can be found in this class along with music, photography, performing arts (dance, music, theatre, etc.) and sports.

800’s Literature One can find poetry, essays, speeches, letters, serial publications (short journals/magazines that publish book reviews, essays, interviews, etc.) and more in the class of literature.

900’s History and Geography The 900’s cover World History, geography, travel, all the continents and history of the ancient world.
