The Marine Biome Fun Facts

50 – 80% of all life on Earth is in the ocean. An ocean upwelling zone is as productive as a tropical rain forest.

Fun Facts A mouthful of seawater contains millions of bacterial cells, hundreds of thousands of phytoplankton, and tens of thousands of zooplankton. The Great Barrier Reef, measuring 2300km in length, is the largest living structure on Earth and can be seen from space.

Fun Facts Although shark attacks get a lot of attention, this is far less than the number of people killed each year by elephants, bees, crocodiles, lightning, or many other natural dangers. Humans kill somewhere between million sharks every year through fishing activities.

Fun Facts The blue whale is the largest animal on our planet and has a heart the size of a Volkswagen. Swordfish and marlin are the fastest fish in the ocean, reaching speeds up to 121 km/h. Some fish, especially rare deep-sea fish, have both male and female sex organs.
