GRIT OPTIMISM MINDSET PERSONALITY TESTING AND EVALUATION

ANGELA DUCKWORTH GRIT- TAKE THE ASSESSMENT

WHAT IS GRIT? At the elite United States Military Academy, West Point, a cadet's grit score was the best predictor of success in the rigorous summer training program known as "Beast Barracks." Grit mattered more than intelligence, leadership ability or physical fitness. At the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the grittiest contestants were the most likely to advance to the finals -- at least in part because they studied longer, not because they were smarter or were better spellers. Grit: Grit refers to the perseverance and passion for long-term goals. This is characterized as working persistently towards challenges, maintained effort and interest over years despite negative feedback, adversity, plateaus in progress, or failure. High grit people view accomplishments as a marathon rather than an immediate goal. High grit individuals normally earn higher GPAs in school, and make fewer career changes than less gritty individuals. Duckworth Grit

OVERALL SCORES Add three B’s PmB PvB PsB Total B Add three G’s PmG PvG PsG Total G Total G minus Total B = Total optimism score

TOTAL B SCORE (HOW YOU THINK ABOUT BAD EVENTS) 3 to 6marvelously optimistic 6 to 9moderately optimistic 10 or 11average 12-14moderately pessimistic 15 or oververy pessimistic, need to read Changing chapters

TOTAL G SCORE (HOW YOU THINK ABOUT GOOD EVENTS) 19 or highermarvelously optimistic 17 to 19moderately optimistic 14 to 16average 11 to 13moderately pessimistic 10 or lessvery pessimistic, need to read Changing chapters

TOTAL OPTIMISM SCORE (G-B) 9 or aboveoptimistic across the board 6 to 8moderately optimistic 3 to 5average 1 or 2moderately pessimistic 0very pessimistic, need to read Changing chapters

HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN FAILURE? Permanence When you make a mistake or fall flat on your face, do you see the failure as a temporary setback or as a permanent trait? Do you say to yourself, “I really messed that one up, but I’ll get it next time?” or do you say to yourself, “Wow, I always mess that up?” *Controls how you DO things.

HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN FAILURE? Pervasiveness Something is pervasive when it invades everything. It is global. Is your attitude “pervasive”? –When you make a mistake, do you throw your hands up in the air and say “that whole thing was horrible!” or “I always do badly at ___________.”? *Also controls how you DO things.

HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN FAILURE? Personalization To internalize something; to make it a part of you, your personality. When you fail, do you think the mistake is part of your identity? That it came from some in-born trait? Do you make a dispositional attribution or do you also focus on situational factors? *Controls how you FEEL, not what you DO. *Easier to change. *Start here to change your approach, if you are pessimistic. *Not the most important factor to change … that is permanence. *Optimism is a tool to be applied in certain situations … not in ALL situations

CAROL DWECK - MINDSET TAKE THE MINDSET ASSESSMENT
