Aim: What are renewable and non- renewable resources? Do Now: Where do we get our energy from?

How many different energy resources are part of this scene? Spot the energy resources

Turn and Talk What do you think nonrenewable resources are? Break it down... Nonrenewable? Resource?

NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption (use).

Non-Renewable Resources are Finite. Finite- They are limited in quantity and will finish.

Examples Nuclear Energy Fossil Fuels (Coal, Petroleum, Gas)

NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!

COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

HOW IS COAL MADE ???

What waste do fossil fuels produce? Burning fossil fuels creates waste products that can act as pollutants and harm the environment. Carbon dioxide –a greenhouse produced by burning fossil fuels. Sulfur dioxide and nitric oxides – contribute to acid rain.

Talk and Turn If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?

RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Water

SOLAR Energy from the sun is renewable because the sun is always available.

GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat. Why is energy from the heat of the Earth renewable?

WIND Energy from the wind. Why is energy from the wind renewable?

WATER or HYDROELECTRIC Energy from the flow of water. Why is energy of flowing water renewable?

Activity With your partner try to complete the advantage/disadvantage page for the listed energy sources. We will review together.

SUMMARY What are the differences between nonrenewable and renewable resources?

Energy resources can be classified into two groups. Renewable energy resources can be replaced or regenerated and will never run out (at least not for a very long time). Non-renewable energy resources will eventually run out – once used they cannot be used again. Non-renewable Renewable What do renewable and non-renewable mean? Examples: wind and solar. Examples: coal and oil.
