Third US-China Workshop on Nanostructured Materials for Global Energy and Environmental Challenges R. P. H. Chang, Northwestern University, DMR The Third US-China Workshop on Nanostructured Materials for Global Energy and Environmental Challenges was held in Beijing, China, September 20-22, Primary Goal: This workshop focused primarily on research planning. One-on-one interactions were encouraged, and the workshop produced nineteen collaborative projects for potential funding by U.S. and Chinese agencies. Research projects ranged from: Materials synthesis and characterization to device design and development. Outcomes: Participants discussed the following initiatives which were intended to support the collaborative research projects: 1) Renzhong Tai of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility at the CAS Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics and Murray Gibson of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory discussed opportunities for shared use of synchrotron facilities, 2) discussions on educational initiatives such as the development of joint short courses and webinar / lectures to be presented by US and Chinese faculty. Program Highlights The workshop program consisted of a panel discussion, a poster session, lab tours, and a series of parallel sessions to plan collaborative research projects. Panel Discussion: Several participants spoke about successful US-China collaboration. Chinese funding programs and opportunities for international collaboration were presented by both US and Chinese scientists. Project Planning Sessions: The goal was for participants to make as many project “matches” as possible and to document their discussions by creating a Project Outline for each promising collaboration idea they identified. The Summary Session provided participants with the opportunity to share Project Outlines in order to inform others of opportunities for collaboration. Poster Session: Participants shared posters describing their current research and capabilities. Lab Tours: Local lab tours were arranged at the CAS Institute of Physics, the CAS Institute of Chemistry, and Tsinghua University. Project Planning Sessions The goal of the project planning sessions was for participants to make as many project “matches” as possible and to document their discussions by creating a Project Outline for each promising collaboration idea they identified. Conference rooms were dedicated to particular research areas, such as: materials characterization, catalysis, electrochemistry, fabrication and materials synthesis. Participants were encouraged to move freely from room to room, and to interact with as many partners as possible. At the end of the workshop, Project Outlines were shared with other participants to make them aware of opportunities for collaboration.
