Components of the Earth

1.Atmosphere (air) is the gases surrounding the Earth.

2. Hydrosphere (water) is the water found on Earth (clouds, oceans, seas, ice caps, lakes, rivers, groundwater) Approximately 71% of the Earth is covered by water. Approximately 71% of the Earth is covered by water. 97% of this water is in the oceans (salt water) 3% is freshwater 2% locked in the icecaps 1% underground 1% underground < 1% surface water of lakes, < 1% surface water of lakes, rivers, and wetlands rivers, and wetlands

Lithosphere (soil) is the solid outer crust of the earth which includes all soil and rock.

4. Biosphere is all the living organisms on Earth. organisms on Earth. The Biosphere depends on the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere to support life. The Biosphere depends on the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere to support life.

4 Component Parts of the Earth Questions 1. Atmosphere: a) Which layer contains the air we breath? b) What are the main gases that make up this layer? c) Which layer contains “protective” ozone gas? 2. Hydrosphere: a) List the different forms of water found on Earth. b) How much of the Earth is covered by water? c) How much water on Earth is freshwater? 3. Lithosphere: a) How thick is the crust compared to the whole Earth? b) How does the crust move? 4. Biosphere: a) What do living organisms depend on for survival? b) List 5 major ecosystems that are found in the biosphere.
