Old Dutch Wind mills Often used for grain Milling and water Pumping

A very familiar landscape in Netherlands Now mainly preserved For touristic purposes

Modern Wind Electric Generators a familiar sight all over Europe

History of Wind Power in Sri Lanka The First ever 1.5 kW 3 bladed dc wind generator was installed at Pattiyapola in the Hambantota District at the Rural Energy Centre under a project funded by the UNEP. In Sri Lanka The Water Resources Board have tried out different wind driven water pumps with the assistance of the Government of The Netherlands way back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. In late 80’s the first ever scientific study of the wind potential was carried out wit Dutch assistance carried out by the CEB. In the mid Nineties the first 3MW wind pilot project was carried out by CEB. NREL did an island wide survey of wind potential that revealed enormous wind potential in Sri Lanka. Commencing from mid 2000 large scale wind electric generation commenced.

In case where Wind speed measurements are not available for a specific site use Wieringer’s assumption - wind speed is un affected by the roughness coefficient at a height of 60 m hence use the formula:

Explanation of Lift

Turbulence caused by an obstruction

Acceleration caused over a smooth rolling hill
