Mythbusters/HSAP Edition Purpose of the presentation: The High School Apprenticeship Program has been around for a few years. Discussions indicate however, that there is some misinformation and some general confusion about certain aspects of the program.

Let’s Get Started! Let’s see if we can’t debunk a few myths!

True or False Through the HSAP program a student can earn up to six credits towards High School Graduation.

The Facts A student can actually earn up to 8 credits towards high school graduation through the HSAP program. BONUS…ALL CREDITS ARE AT THE GRADE 12 LEVEL!!!!!

True or False In order to apprentice, your mentor must be a ticketed, red seal, or certified journeyperson.

The Facts Although the best case scenario is to be apprenticed under a journeyperson, there are times that an employer with a lot of experience can apply to be a “designated trainer”. Designated trainers can train apprentices after indicating their experience and knowledge of a particular trade.

True or False In order to participate in the HSAP program a student must attend school in the morning and go to work in the afternoon.

The Facts The HSAP is very flexible. Students can earn apprenticeship hours and high school credit outside of the school day, on weekends, and even during the summer. Please note that an apprenticeship must be registered before collecting apprenticeship hours or credits.

True or False Your uncle, mom, or other family member can apprentice you.

The Facts A family member can apprentice you provided they are a licensed journeyperson or designated trainer. Family connections are often utilized in order for students to apprentice.

True or False The HSAP program is for students who do not want to go to university.

The Facts Many students participate in the HSAP program and go off to pursue other aspirations at university. The HSAP program is one that opens doors, creates different pathways, and allows students to learn life-long skills that can be applied everywhere.

True or False If you wish to be involved in the HSAP program you can set up a meeting with Mr. Hordeski and he will get you a job so that you can begin earning credits and apprenticeship hours.

The Facts Homework for the HSAP program involves the student getting a job. Mr. Hordeski can register and monitor your apprenticeship and credits earned, but it is up to the student to find the job.

True or False The minimum that you can be paid as an apprentice is minimum wage plus 10%.

The Facts An employer can pay you more, but the minimum an employer can pay you to apprentice is minimum wage plus 10%. The employer also gets tax incentives to hire high school apprentices. Employers like the program because they can explore the possibility of taking a chance on a student that they might otherwise be unable to afford.

True or False If you sign up for the HSAP there is no need to take other vocational programming at school.

The Facts The HSAP is a perfect compliment to your current vocational programming. HSAP allows you to apply the technical training learned at school to your apprenticeship.

True or False Application for the HSAP is at the beginning of each semester.

The Facts Students can register for the HSAP throughout the school year.

True or False A student can register for the HSAP if they are working in a restaurant as a cook.

The Facts If the restaurant has a red seal chef or a designated trainer a student can obtain HSAP credits. ****Fast Food restaurants do not count.

The Facts Every 110 hours worked equals a grade 12 credit (to a maximum of 8).
