Gasoline vs Diesel: which is better for you

Price of car and fuel efficiency Price of car is generally higher at time of purchase but diesel gets better fuel mileage.

Engine Maintaince Gasoline engine Required maintaince items are check and change fluids and filters at specific intervals, change belts at specific intervals and change spark plugs at specific intervals. Diesel engine Reqired manitance is the same as gas except the intervals are usually higher so you don’t have to service engine as often. Because diesel works off of compression there are no spark plugs which can save money.

Life of vehicles Gasoline engine Typical life of a gasoline car assuming that required maintance was done is about 150,000 miles before needing to be rebuilt. Diesel engine Typical life of a diesel car assuming that required maintance was done is about 400,000 miles before needing to be rebuilt which is more than doubled the life of a gasoline engine.

Resale value over 5 years Generally diesel vehicles have a better resale value meaning you get more of your money back with diesel than you would gasoline.

Total cost of ownership over 5 years Total cost ownership over 5 years is generally lower for diesels with a few exceptions* *ram 2500 and Ford f-250 are made to haul so you will not see much difference in cost of ownership unless you use those vehicles for their intended uses.
