H-ECCTD KICK-OFF DEVELOPMENT PLAN AND SCHEDULE 16/03/2016

ELLIPTICAL SUPERCONDUCTING CAVITIES CRYOMODULES Cryoline Valve box Elliptical cavity cryomodule Proton Beam Quadrupole Highest priority in 2016 H-ECCTD purpose: -Qualify the « high beta technology » -Prepare the series procurements -Prepare industrial subcontractor for the assembly -Test a transport to Lund -Could be used as a spare cryomodule in the tunnel H-ECCTD purpose: -Qualify the « high beta technology » -Prepare the series procurements -Prepare industrial subcontractor for the assembly -Test a transport to Lund -Could be used as a spare cryomodule in the tunnel

MAIN FEATURES OF THE H-ECCTD CRYOMODULE  Four superconducting cavities 5 cells at MHz - b=0.86  E acc max = 19.9 MV/m, Q 0 > (6.5 W RF losses per cavity)  Power coupler: 1.1 MW max  Slow tuning system: ± 300 kHz  Fast tuning system (LFD) : 1+1 piezo, ± 1 kHz  Cavity cooling: LHe at 2 K  Coupler cooling: SHe at 4.5 K, 3 bars  Thermal shielding cooling: LHe 50 K  Overall length: 6584 mm from flange to flange  Thermal losses: Static losses at 50 K: 46.2 W Static losses at 2 K: 12.2 W Dynamic losses at 2 K: 27.6 W  Four superconducting cavities 5 cells at MHz - b=0.86  E acc max = 19.9 MV/m, Q 0 > (6.5 W RF losses per cavity)  Power coupler: 1.1 MW max  Slow tuning system: ± 300 kHz  Fast tuning system (LFD) : 1+1 piezo, ± 1 kHz  Cavity cooling: LHe at 2 K  Coupler cooling: SHe at 4.5 K, 3 bars  Thermal shielding cooling: LHe 50 K  Overall length: 6584 mm from flange to flange  Thermal losses: Static losses at 50 K: 46.2 W Static losses at 2 K: 12.2 W Dynamic losses at 2 K: 27.6 W These parameters are only objective values based on ESS requirements, not formal acceptance criteria

COMPONENTS ALREADY ORDERED Niobium for 5 cavities [Tokyo Denkai] Coupleur antenna and RF ceramic window [Toshiba] Doorknob transitions [PMB] Magnetic shielding [Meca magnetic] Cold tuning system [Gavard] Motors [Phytron] Piezo actuators [Noliac] Cavity pick-up antennas [Solcera] Coupler pick-up antenna [Solcera] Coupleur vacuum gauges [Pfeiffer]

NIOBIUM TOKYO DENKAI have won the call for tender for the supply of the niobium for the 5 superconducting cavities The order include spare parts for the cavity manufacturer The contract (2 original paper versions) will be sent very soon to the company for signature

COUPLER ANTENNA AND RF WINDOW Eight RF windows were ordered at Toshiba (Japan) Four of them have been received at CEA and will be used for the M-ECCTD The next four windows will arrive within two or three months and will be dedicated to the H-ECCTD

DOORKNOB TRANSITIONS The PMB company (France) have manufactured most of the parts of the four doorknob transitions Delivery at Saclay is foreseen in few weeks

NEW PROCUREMENTS Five cavities (within a single supplier) Couplers: six external conductors for Qx adjustement Vacuum vessel, spaceframe, thermal shielding Cavity supports, inter-cavity belows and cold-warm transitions Diphasic tubes and cryogenic circuits, MLI Instrumentation New assembly toolings (if needed) New procurement strategy!

PROCUREMENT STRATEGY The 30 series cryomodule production will require a large number of calls for tender and commercial contracts (around 40 contracts!) In order to meet the ESS time schedule, these contracts must be prepared in 2016 and launched in 2017 We propose to include the H-ECCTD cryostat components procurements in the series cryomodule contracts:  It will mobilize the CEA teams for the series cryomodule activities  It will reduce the number of call for tender to manage  It will avoid to change the manufacturer between the prototype and series phases

H-ECCTD PLANNING 2016: procurement process and start of the components fabrication 2017: Cavity and coupler preparation and tests Nov > Mars. 2018: Cavity string integration and cryostating June 2018: High power tests (first main results) Success oriented planning: The “high beta CDR” planned the 13 th of Oct would be delayed in April 2018 or late in 2018 (depending on the serie MB cryomodules)

SACLAY One The “High beta CDR” in Oct could be kept if a “cavity package” high power test would be performed The horizontal cryostat CRYOLAB at CEA Saclay is well adapted for this experiment However, the availability of CRYOLAB will be very limited in 2017, as well as the manpower dedicated to its operation 704 MHz SPL beta=1 cavity installed inside CRYOLAB

The HNOSS horizontal cryostat at Uppsala is similar to CRYOLAB and could host a high beta ESS elliptical cavity equipped with a power coupler and a tuner Uppsala will also have a 704 MHz klystron and a modulator to produce 1 MW RF power a new circulator and a new waveguide line (30 m) is missing would be needed this cryostat seems available HNOSS horizontal cryostat After a short discussion with Roger Ruber (UU): CEA is interested in such a collaboration opportunity and is open to discuss in order to not delay the CDR and the ESS schedule Additional cost should be adressed CEA is interested in such a collaboration opportunity and is open to discuss in order to not delay the CDR and the ESS schedule Additional cost should be adressed ESS HB ellipt. cavity
