pH and Enzymes Self Assessment Enzymes all have their own optimum pH. If they are placed in and environment either side of their preferred pH the enzyme activity begins to drop. This is because the enzyme changes shape, altering the active site. Unlike temperature, putting an enzyme in the wrong pH will not denature it. Once the enzyme is placed back into its optimum pH it will continue to function.

Similarities Differences Learning Activity Compare differences and similarities between the effects of temperature and pH on enzymes. Similarities Differences Both temperature and pH alter the shape of enzymes. All enzymes have optimums for pH and temperature. Temperature can denature enzymes, whereas pH cannot. Temperature is a gradual guild up to the optimum, whereas, pH is more sudden.
