Service Retirement Calculation Three factors are used to calculate a service retirement. Service Credit, Benefit Factor and Final Compensation are each used to compute a service retirement calculation

Service Credit Service credit is one of the three factors in the service retirement calculation. Service credit is earned by fiscal year, July 1 to June 30. During this time period, CalPERS members have an opportunity to earn one year of service credit.

Earning Service Credit Monthly paid employees can earn one year service credit by working 10 full time months

Earning Service Credit 1 Daily paid employees can earn one year service credit by working 215 days

Earning Service Credit 2 Hourly paid employees can earn one year service credit by working 1,720 hours

Service Credit Purchase Options Service credit purchase options allow a member, if they qualify to purchase additional service credit which will increase their retirement benefit Publication 12 contains all necessary information to make a election

Benefit Factor The benefit factor is the second factor in the retirement calculation. The benefit factor is based on your retirement formula and your age at retirement

Final Compensation Final compensation is the third factor in the retirement calculation. Your membership date with CalPERS will determine if CalPERS uses the highest 12 or 36 months to determine your averaged final compensation

Additional Resources CalPERS provides two helpful calculators to help members understand their retirement benefits and also to help members determine if a service credit purchase is right for them
