Phenomenal PowerPoint Academic Medicine Session 5 Jennifer L. Middleton, MD, MPH, FAAFP

Objectives 1.Recall the characteristics of quality objectives. 2.Describe the difference between serif and sans serif font. 3.Adjust visual support to maximally support your content.

What makes a presentation good or bad?

Content Objectives Structure Handouts

Focus Focus on 3 to 4 main points. objectives Identify those points at the beginning with your objectives.

Quality objectives Action verbs Measurable Otherwise, how do you know that you met your goals?

or not? “understand” “appreciate” “review”

handouts ≠ copies of slides

Readability Font Colors

What’s the difference? Arial Geneva Helvetica Tahoma Calibri Times New Roman Courier Palatino Gabriola Century Schoolbook

serif = tail Serif Less fatiguing for close-up reading (books, handouts) Sans serif Less fatiguing for distance reading (PowerPoint, Prezi) sans = without

Font size Don’t make your text too small. 24 point is usually the limit. 28 point or 32 point or 36 point is better. Important exception: references for content and images are ok discreetly placed at the bottom of the slide.

“Slide Karoake”

Testing for corneal abrasion Start by turning off the lights in the room. –Make the room as dark as possible. –Otherwise it will be difficult to see the abrasions light up when you use the cobalt blue light. Use a cobalt blue light to look for any abrasions. –Shine the light directly on the eye and look for any areas that fluoresce green –Make sure you lift the eyelids and have the patient look in all directions to make sure that you see as much of the cornea as possible. –If you see any fluorescing areas, those are corneal abrasions Store the cobalt blue light in the refrigerator when not in use. –This helps it to last longer.

“Slide Karoake” Can you sing along?

Keep backgrounds simple and visual clutter to a minimum.

Dark room? Use a light background with dark font. (It doesn’t have to be black but be careful with red.)

Light room? Use a dark background with a light font. (early PowerPoint: white on blue)

Slide Design White space Visual support Animations

Beware......of death by bullets... point after slide after slide of bullets is boring!

Designing without bullets forces your creative hand!

Try not too leave too little open space on the slide…

…or too much.

Optimize your visual support with PowerPoint tools. change size

crop

remove background

adjust brightness & contrast

artistic effects

Use animation effects sparingly and thoughtfully. Fly in Float in Bounce Swivel Wheel

Animation used wisely can help keep your audience’s attention. Especially when you have several connected ideas that would be overwhelming if presented all at once.

Remember: your audience can read faster than you can speak.

Make sure that your visual support is relevant. Pics of your family, pets, etc probably should be left to the end (if included at all).

Cartoons should be relevant to your content. Can perk up your audience Can distract your audience

Objectives 1.Recall the characteristics of quality objectives. 2.Describe the difference between serif and sans serif font. 3.Adjust visual support to maximally support your content.
