Proposed Regulations for the Commercial Herring Fishery Proposed Regulations for the Commercial Herring Fishery Presented by the Department of Fish and Game Marine Region

Provide a quota range of 0 to 10% of the spawning biomass of 38,409 tons Provide a quota range of 0 to 10% of the spawning biomass of 38,409 tons Recommend a quota of 1,920 tons (5% harvest rate) Recommend a quota of 1,920 tons (5% harvest rate) Integrate the December “DH” platoon into the Odd and Even platoons Integrate the December “DH” platoon into the Odd and Even platoons San Francisco Bay Herring Roe Fishery

Status of the Population  Biomass estimate for season was 38,409 tons  A significant increase over previous season estimate of 4,844 tons  Increase due to strong recruitment of 2-year old herring ( year class)  Low harvest rate recommendation provides a sustainable fishery and continued stock rebuilding

Minor Changes Update season dates for Tomales and San Francisco bays Update season dates for Tomales and San Francisco bays Remove reference to season dates for the closed ocean waters fishery Remove reference to season dates for the closed ocean waters fishery Minor regulatory language changes to improve clarity and consistency Minor regulatory language changes to improve clarity and consistency

Summary  A quota within the range of 0 to 10% of the spawning biomass  The Department recommends a quota of 1,920 tons  The Department supports integration of the December platoon into the Odd and Even platoons

The Department would like to thank the San Francisco Bay Herring Research Association for their valuable assistance with field surveys during herring spawning season.

Thank you Thomas A. Greiner Associate Marine Biologist California Department of Fish and Game Bodega Bay, CA office (707)
