Can You Cover Me? (Warm Up) The Robinsons have decided to carpet their family room which is 21 ft by 16 ft. While shopping for the best prices, they bought store remains that measured 285 ft². Did they purchase enough of the store remains? Area = length x width A = 336 ft² A = 21 x 16 No, they did not purchase enough of the remains. They need 336 ft² of carpeting and only purchased 285 ft². They are 51 ft² short.

Squared Finding the area of a square is quite similar to finding the area of a rectangle. With a rectangle, the length and the width are different. With a square, the length and width are equal or the same and are called sides. Therefore, let us revisit the use of squares and square roots.

Squared Do you remember all of your perfect squares up to 15²? 20² ? 25² ? Recall that squaring a number is actually telling you to multiply a number to itself. So, 15² is 15 x 15 which is 225; 20² is 20 x 20 which is 400 and 25² is 25 x 25 which is 625. Looking at the square below, what would be the area? 6 yd A = ? A = s ² = s x s A = 6² = 6 x 6 A = 36 yd²

Squared What about the this square? What is it’s area? 13 ft A = ? A = s ² = s x s A = 13² = 13 x 13 A = 169 ft²

Squared What would you do if you knew the area of the square and had to determine the side length? ? mi A = 144 mi² The inverse or opposite operation of squaring a number is to take the square root. Looking at the square on the left. We know that the area is 144 mi². Can you tell what number multiplied to itself will equal to 144? A = s² 144 = s x s √144 = s 12 = s

Squared ? in A = 81 in² Looking at the square on the left. We know that the area is 81 in². Can you tell what number multiplied to itself will equal to 81? A = s² 81 = s x s √81 = s 9 = s

What is the length of each side? 3.Lucinda is building a patio with a floor shaped like a square. The perimeter of the floor is 90 feet. What is the area of the patio in square feet?
