Since the Last All-Hands Meeting… Publications to which GINA staff contributed: “Validation of VIIRS EDR Imagery from the SNPP and JPSS Satellites” in journal Remote Sensing released in JanuaryValidation of VIIRS EDR Imagery from the SNPP and JPSS Satellites COMET module “JPSS River Ice and Flood Products” released in MarchJPSS River Ice and Flood Products River Ice and Flooding: “New” hardware configured at GINA in March (just in time for the spring breakup season) to generate products from direct broadcast VIIRS data Dr. Sanmei Li of George Mason University traveled to Fairbanks and Anchorage in April as a visiting scientist 6/22/2016Proving Ground All-Hands Meeting3

Dr. Sanmei Li, visiting scientist 6/22/2016Proving Ground All-Hands Meeting4

Since the Last All-Hands Meeting… Dr. Evan Ellicott of University of Maryland worked in Fairbanks as a visiting scientist in March. Collaborated with NWS, University of Alaska, and Alaska Fire Service Conferences and Workshops Carl Dierking and Eric Stevens and other liaisons participated in Himawari and GOES-R ABI workshop in Kansas City in March During “Arctic Science Summit Week” in Fairbanks in March, briefing on use of proving ground imagery to support emergency services in Alaska Proving Ground User Readiness meeting in Norman Remote briefing on topic of sea ice to NOAA- Environment Canada marine workshop in May 6/22/2016Proving Ground All-Hands Meeting5

Status of Initiatives and Other Efforts Amanda Terborg, satellite liaison to the Aviation Weather Center, is also supporting the Alaska Aviation Weather Unit (AAWU) and Center Weather Service Unit (CWSU) Meetings in Anchorage May 3-5 Follow-up remote training sessions this summer, and beyond? Emphasis on using Proving Ground imagery and products to assess ceilings, visibility, icing, and turbulence Also discussion of volcanic ash, as events occur NUCAPS being assessed in Alaska during the summer wildfire season Emphasis on basic familiarization of the forecasters Using a blog, web-based form, and live and remote training sessions 6/22/2016Proving Ground All-Hands Meeting6

Status of Initiatives and Other Efforts Collaborations with Alaska Fire Service (AFS) currently focus on integrating GINA’s proving ground imagery into FX-CAVE and other systems Evan Ellicott perhaps visiting Alaska in July to facilitate progress here Building ties to Department of Defense. This week Eric Stevens is working with the 17 th Operational Weather Squadron at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam to discuss the new satellite proving ground products and their use in forecasting in Alaska Carl Dierking adding more functionality to AWIPS: On-the-fly multispectral and RGB generation Multi-satellite mosaics Integrated Training Tool Jiang Zhu using satellite sounding profiles in local NWP model data assimilation 6/22/2016Proving Ground All-Hands Meeting9

Status of Initiatives and Other Efforts Quick Guides Make more of them Make them available as hard copy, on line, and within AWIPS 6/22/2016Proving Ground All-Hands Meeting10

Upcoming Meetings OCONUS Technical Interchange Meeting next week EUMETSAT annual meeting in September…GINA’s participation still not certain AMS annual meeting in January 6/22/2016Proving Ground All-Hands Meeting11
