Unit 3 Day 10 Reconstruction Quote: “I feel incompetent to perform duties...which have been so unexpectedly thrown upon me.” - Andrew Johnson Focus Question(s): What were the most significant impacts of Reconstruction policies on America? Justify. Specified Content: Reconstruction State Standards: Strand 1 Concept 6 PO 3

Reconstruction Now that the war was over the country needed to be “Reconstructed”. Vice President Andrew Johnson from Tennessee takes over for Lincoln. Many Republicans from the North will question his easy treatment of the Southern States.

Over the next five years three Amendments will be passed granting African Americans more rights. 13th Amendment forbids slavery, 14th Amendment makes all Blacks citizens and the 15th Amendment grants all males the right to vote.

The Government will pass laws in 1870 and 1871 known as the Enforcement Acts. These laws make it a crime to interfere with the rights of people guaranteed by the new Amendments.

The Southern states will suffer through a military occupation while they will slowly be readmitted to the Union.

Many Southerners tried to oppose Northern Reconstruction and limit the rights of African Americans. Others formed vigilante groups including the Ku Klux Klan to restore white supremacy
